I am a university-level Spanish language and English language and writing coach with 21 years of teaching experience. I have a B.A. in Language and Literature from Yale University, and 5 have taught at Yeshiva University, Columbia University, and the New York College of Medicine.
About my Spanish coaching first: I wrote my own book on beginning Spanish grammar for medical students at Einstein College of Medicine, and for many years I was a Spanish language curriculum developer at Manhattan's Latin American Workshop language school. My broad knowledge of Latin American culture has landed me consultant positions on projects for a number of large media companies. I like to enliven my Spanish and English classes with materials from some of these projects such as music, poetry and art. Mostly I have taught adults, but I have also tutored high school students privately, helping them refine their essay writing skills for the SAT and college admissions tests. I also have a strong background in AP Spanish test prep. I have taught at a number of corporations including General Motors, Brooklyn Legal Services, and Trinity Investments. Besides AP Spanish, my specialty subjects include Spanish for Travelers, Medical Spanish, Business Spanish, Legal Spanish, Spanish for Lactation Consultants and Spanish for Social Workers.
Now, let me tell you about my English and writing coaching! I teach grammar and writing skills to all ages, and enjoy inspiring young people to enjoy and become engaged with poetry and good literature. I was a professional writer in my former career as a publicist for Sports Illustrated, Time International and Interview magazine, so I am keen on punchy, effective prose! I help my students conceptualize and shape their writing work and develop their creative instincts and learn the fundamentals of standard written English.
I just love teaching! I get good results with my students because I help to simplify and codify concepts so that they can make fast and permanent improvement. I am also sensitive to the fact that different people have different learning styles, so I adapt my approach for each student.
IMPORTANT: My cancellation policy is now 48 hours in advance; otherwise, the class will be charged to you. d I do not allow exceptions. I prefer to schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings at a regular hour and for a minimum of four meetings in advance except for first lessons which, while paid, are considered a test for both student and teacher.
PLEASE NOTE ALSO: I have recently moved to Durham, NC. But I am still available to former clients in New York and New Jersey via Skype.
Please feel free to write me with your questions and goals. I hope to meet you soon!
