Hi All,
Thanks for checking out my profile! First things first: I'm a 27 year old male prospective graduate student who's looking to make a little extra cash before enrolling at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for Fall Term 2013. As far as my qualifications are concerned, I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa where I majored in American History with a particular focus on legal/political history. I graduated with a 4.0 I took many reading/writing intensive seminars. I'm a Libra. I like awful music. I've memorized The Big Lebowski in its entirety.
My pedagogical philosophy: History, in sum, is not rote memorization of events or dates. Historical inquiry is a philosophical/spiritual pursuit. History is literature and love and passion and pain and turmoil; it is freighting and compelling, it is the sum total of all that we are as a people and as individuals. Everybody has history, everybody IS history. In short, history in general, like any individual's life experience, cannot be confined to a chapter in a book, a multiple choice exam or even the coursework involved in completing a college degree. The study of the past is an orientation, a way of looking at the present and appreciating the depth and complexity of each and every person, of each and every moment. I believe that if I can help cultivate an appreciation of the subject, knowledge of the subject matter will come effortlessly. My goal is to help you succeed; my hope is that you may fall in love with the discipline.
Thanks very much for your consideration, good luck in your studies and I look forward to hearing from you!
Jesse
