I graduated from the College of Education at Michigan State University with a degree in English secondary education and 12 credits towards a master's in education. I am certified to teach English and ESOL for grades 6th-12th in Michigan, South Carolina, and Georgia, and I have experience tutoring and teaching in both of these subject areas. As a college student, my summers were spent tutoring ESL students, particularly Korean, in learning the English language and also tutoring students at local grade schools. The past 3 years I have taught in public schools, including a year-long internship in a 6th grade classroom where I was the lead teacher for 3 months. After that experience, I taught at one of the top high schools in Michigan as a temporary full-time 10th and 11th grade English Literature teacher. This past year I taught 7th grade language arts at a middle school in South Carolina. My recent marriage, which brought me to Georgia, is my reason for leaving this past job. Spending one-on-one time tutoring students who seek additional help with the English subject area allows me to continue using my teaching degree and share my expertise as an educator.
As a teacher, I demonstrate a talent for designing age appropriate lesson plans and activities that foster growth in the core curriculum as well as personal and academic development. One example of this occurs when students participate in literature circles and are able to select only the books that interest them. I also offer individualized support to ensure that all of my student's unique needs and goals are met. Once every week I met with each student to conference with him or her individually and to gauge whether or not they are understanding the material. I strive to provide a well-balanced, engaging and supportive learning environment for my students. I understand the need for differentiated instruction and individual education plans to generate independent thought and to represent each student's diverse needs/interests.
All of the skills that I have gained from being in the classroom will be used in my commitment to capture my student's attention and improve reading and writing skills. During my time in South Carolina I completed the first year of the statewide mentor program with high regards and positive feedback. Several observations by district mentors and the principal are a mandatory part of the program and I was observed teaching multiple times throughout the year. One of these mentors summed up what she saw in my classroom in one simple phrase, "You have what it takes to excel in teaching." I am a motivated educator who posses strong people skills and has a proven ability to develop a positive rapport with my students.
