I worked as a CPA for about 10 years, then left the workplace to home educate my children. I tutored my own children in all their subjects from K-5 through 8th grade. I also tutored them in several high school subjects. I specialize in SAT prep including math, writing and reading. I designed and have taught a one semester SAT prep class several times. I have taught classes in my Evans home, as well as in a home school co-op setting. I also tutor several students in math. I primarily tutor up to Algebra 2, but have also tutored some college algebra students. I have also tutored and taught elementary and middle school courses, including math, English, grammar, geography and history.

My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess what issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in a manner that they are able to learn it.

I have tutored several students in SAT (ACT) preparation over the past 3 or so years. I have worked one on one with students at all levels of academic skill. I specialize in SAT prep including math, writing and reading. I designed a one semester SAT prep class which I have taught several times.

ACT Science

The science portion of the ACT does not necessarily test a student's science knowledge (although having a strong science knowledge base will be most helpful on the exam), but according to the ACT test writers, the exam tests your ability to:
1. Recognize and understand the basic features of, and concepts related to, the provided information
2. Examine critically the relationship between the information provided and the conclusions drawn or hypotheses developed
3. Generalize from given information and draw conclusions, gain new information, or make predictions

Therefore preparation and coaching for the science portion of the exam must focus on these skills, and that is exactly what I do as an ACT science prep tutor.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 to several students in a small class setting as well as one on one tutoring. My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess the issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in such a manner that they are able to learn it.

Algebra 2

I have tutored several students in advanced algebra including college algebra. I will be teaching a small class Algebra 2 in the Fall 2013. My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess what issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in a manner that they are able to learn it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught & tutored in elementary subjects including math, language arts, reading, science and social studies/history for several years.

Having worked towards an education degree for three years before switching to an accounting major, I studied education methods and techniques. I understand that teachers must teach their subjects in such a manner that the majority of their 15-30+students can learn it. They have very little time to assess students individually, and even less time to adjust their teaching methods based on that assessment. As an elementary tutor, I am able to assess a student while explaining the subject matter to them. I work toward understanding the challenges and difficulties that are interfering with their learning. At that point, I can customize the teaching method to the needs of the child. I understand the necessity of customized one on one education designed to meet the needs of the student.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is in many ways the most important math. It's like the cornerstone of a building. If it is not set properly, it is very difficult to build a study structure on top of it. Elementary math gives students the tools they need to learn higher math.
My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess the issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in such a manner that they are able to learn it.

Elementary Science

The key to teaching elementary science, is to teach the elementary child.

Although a PhD in chemistry or physics could be described as a specialist in the subject, that does not mean that he or she would be able to teach an elementary student.

My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess what issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in such a manner that they are able to learn it.

GED

I have tutored both children & adults & would love to help you succeed on the GED exam!
I have found that adults are wonderful students! Adult students are quick to understand what they need help with and are not reluctant to ask. Tutoring sessions are highly efficient and productive.

Prealgebra

I have taught prealgebra to several students both in a small class setting and in a tutoring environment. Prealgebra is a fun math to teach because it takes all the foundational tools that students have acquired and shows the students who those tools are used to solve real life problems. In teaching math, my philosophy is to help the student understand the why so that he / she will be able to remember the what (the process or steps).
My strength as a tutor is that I am able to work with students, assess what issues they are having in learning the material, and then present the material in such a manner that they are able to learn it.

PSAT

I have tutored several students in PSAT & SAT preparation over the past 3 or so years. I have worked one on one with students at all levels of academic skill. I specialize in PSAT / SAT prep including math, writing and reading. I designed a one semester SAT prep class which I have taught several times.

The math problems on the PSAT and the SAT do not use very difficult math concepts. It's just that the math concepts are presented in a manner that is significantly different from what most students have previously seen. I enjoy helping students learn how to approach the various type of math problems they encounter on the PSAT and SAT exams.

SAT Writing

There are some very basic strategies and techniques that I teach students to use on the writing (multiple choice) portion of the SAT exam.

The SAT essay is challenging because of the time limitation. However, there are several strategies and techniques that when applied can be sure to improve a student's score. Working on these concepts with students is one of my favorite area of SAT prep tutoring.

SSAT

I have a lot of experience with test preparation. The SSAT is in many ways like the SAT college entrance exam. I have tutored many students for the SAT and have also designed a class for the SAT which I have taught numerous times to many students. I look forward to applying my test preparation skills to helping your student gain entry to the school of your choice!

Study Skills

As a CPA with a high GPA in college I have personally learned effective study skills.
As a tutor and home school teacher with 13 years experience, I have taught and tutored numerous students in various subjects. One of the first areas I work on with students is improving their study skills. Study skills include time management, organization, memorization techniques, problem solving, and critical thinking. By learning to manage and improve study skills, students not only see their grades in school improve, but also their personal enjoyment of the learning process.

Very Understanding, Knows What She Is Talking About! I recently found Sheila through this website and was hesitant at first to even use a tutor. I learn best through hands-on instruction, memorization and I am very picky about who I learn from when it comes to my grades! However, when I took my first session, I knew it was meant to be. Working with Mrs. Sheila is great!I feel very comfortable, and I can tell she knows what she is talking about. Also ...
