My passion for history
is matched only by my lifelong love for the English language
. After completing my MA in History, I worked as an adjunct college instructor for several years. Since then, I have worked in public libraries, a museum, as well as pursuing various research and writing
projects. All of these things have given me the opportunity to tutor from time-to-time. It is my personal standard to be as fluent as possible in every period and subject area of history. These include American History
, Western Civilization, World History
history and the history of technology. As a former teacher, my focus was always on the needs and interests of students. As a writer, I can also assist with many aspects of written communication, which will serve them beyond the history classroom. As a tutor, my mission will be to help students with critical-thinking skills that not only help them earn better grades, but also give them a lasting appreciation for the place that history has in their learning experience.
The most common complaint about history I hear from students (and often from adults!) is that it's "boring." That's an easy call to make when it's usually presented as little more than "a bunch of names and dates." However, history is so much more than a simple timeline. It's a rich and living narrative, filled with real (not always famous) people whose lives were often not all that different from our own. I teach history with the idea that what we often think of as the distant past was once someone's "here-and-now."
The key to any student's success in a history classroom lies with learning how to feel the flow of history without getting bogged down with memorization. In other words, once the student understands more about the "why" part, the other "4 W's" start to fall into place. Real success happens when a student can then express this "feel" for history in written form (and maybe even in conversation). Solid, thoughtful tutoring can help make that happen.
