Philosophy

I believe a major barrier to foreign language acquisition is the fear of saying the wrong thing. I try to break down this barrier with laughter. The classroom environment is light and jovial, allowing for a free-flow of communication between students and the instructor and among students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

My time in ESL at Columbus State University was really a process that began in 2006 when a group of Colombian colonels came to study there. I had the opportunity to teach 12 of their children a starter ESL course in my home to get them ready to enter the public school system. I was so proud that one of my students, Jose, age 14 at the time, advanced one entire grade level in reading in just eight weeks.

In 2008, I took over as the head of the English Language Institute at Columbus State University where I ran the program for the next three years, tripling the program in size over that time.

Just before I finished that position, Jose, now age 18, had come back from Colombia to study with me at the English Language Institute. He called me to say that he'd gotten his TOEFL scores by email and he scored 102! CSU only requires a 79 minimum for admission to a regular degree-seeking program. Long story short, my work here is done and what a pleasure to have played a part in such great success of my student Jose and others who studied alongside him.

We started our tutoring on October 26th with a singular mission - to raise a semester average to an A in Spanish IV. He had an 88 for the 1st 9 weeks and that would be averaged together with this 9 weeks' grade to get the semester average. Now, just 5 weeks later he has a current grade of 95 - 3 points above our goal! We still have 3 weeks to go until Christmas, and our tutoring sessions continue... read more

As luck would have it, on my final day at the English Language Institute, we took a field trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I was surprised by our dear students with a card signed by more than 30 students and colleagues which held a gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods (based on my endless wearing of an iPod with pedometer at work). Later I received an additional cherished gift by email... read more
