I have been teaching mathematics in middle school and high school for 35 years. I enjoy working with students one-on-one.

It is important to me that my students understand what they are learning. Rote learning in the mathematics classroom is of value only up to a point. Ultimately I want to help a student reach success in math by fostering their ability to master mathematical concepts, to see how those concepts are linked, to be able to think critically, and to effectively apply concepts in problem solving. Despite the fact that particular mathematics skills may never be used in the “real world,” the thinking skills that underlie them certainly will. I expect to be involved in education in some form for the rest of my life. I love teaching. It’s exhilarating to witness the spark that occurs when a student “gets it.”

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the foundation for all mathematics that comes after it. It is essential for students to master concepts, properties and rules, but more important for them to learn to think mathematically. I take a problem solving approach, teaching students how to ask questions. Learning how to ask the right questions is one of the best paths to becoming a successful student of mathematics.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 expands and builds on the concepts learned in Algebra 1. Algebra 1 is the foundation for all mathematics that comes after it. It is essential for students to master concepts, properties and rules, but more important for them to learn to think mathematically and think critically. I take a problem solving approach, teaching students how to ask questions. Learning how to ask the right questions is one of the best paths to becoming a successful student of mathematics.

Grammar

Grammar is the structure and system of a language. In English, there are eight parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections). Grammar also includes what is called syntax, which is a set of rules related to the way words and phrases are arranged in a sentence, in order for it to make sense.

Geometry

Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes such as rectangles or circles (plane geometry) or 3-D solids in space (solid geometry) and their properties. It also includes learning deductive proof – which requires the student to be able to think linearly and employ supporting statements when justifying an argument. Example: demonstrating that two triangles are congruent (or similar) using given information, plus supporting postulates or theorems.

Microsoft Word is the most commonly used "word processor" software in the world. Word processing is a very powerful way to compose and edit any written task you have to accomplish. There are basic skills to be learned at the start – with these you can begin to use the software right away. Prealgebra

Precalculus

Pre-Calculus builds upon Algebra II, Geometry and Trigonometry, and lays the groundwork for advancing into Calculus. The topics include, among others: coordinate geometry, polynomials, functions, logarithms, polar coordinates, conic sections, vectors and determinants, probability and statistics. Finally, the introduction to Calculus introduced the concept of the limit.

English

Mastering the basics of using the English language is essential for any student, or any speaker of another language who hopes to be gainfully employed.

I am competent in teaching writing, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, syntax and spelling.

SAT Math

The SAT Math Level 1 test is a one-hour multiple choice test given on algebra, geometry, basic trigonometry, algebraic functions, elementary statistics and a few miscellaneous topics. A student chooses whether to take the test depending upon college entrance requirements for the schools in which the student is planning to apply. The SAT Math Level 2 test covers more advanced content.
