First I “check in” with the student to see where they are and what they need help with. I am knowledgeable about different learning styles and preferences and if I am able to determine that a particular student is stronger with learning visually rather than verbally, or vice versa, I can alter my tutoring style accordingly. For example, I use drawing pictures and graphs to explain concepts, instead of just describing them verbally. I am patient with students who need repeated explanations of concepts. After determining where the student needs help, I am able to explain the concepts and follow-up to make sure the student understands.

I have successfully tutored students in math at the community college level. When the student brings in worksheets, I go over the first problem or two, explaining the concepts and procedures needed to solve the problems. Then I watch the team member do the next problems to see if she has understood the concepts and procedures being taught.

Also, when the team member has taken a test or exam, we go over the incorrect answers to see what mistakes were made and re-emphasize the correct way to solve the problem. I also will explain to my students about preparing for exams, and what to do before, during and after an exam.

My tutoring experiences have included students in their late teens through the adult years.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have experience tutoring students on the autism spectrum and am very familiar with the condition. I am also familiar with the different types of thinking patterns within the autism spectrum. First there is the Photo Realistic Visual Thinking Object Visualizers, who tend to be poor at algebra. Second are the Pattern Thinkers - Spatial Visualizer Music and Math, who tend to be poor at reading. Third are the Verbal Facts/Language Translation thinkers, who tend to be poor at drawing. Fourth are the Auditory Thinkers, who tend to have fragmented visual perception. There can also be mixtures of these thinking types. In my work with students I will try to determine which of these thinking types the student displays so I can build on their strengths. While working with one student who had been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, I was able to help him raise his grade in statistics from an F to a B, but more importantly, I was able to figure out his learning style and match my tutoring to what he needed, as well as help him cope with his anxiety.

The Best Tutor

I just completed a course titled Applied Statistics for Psychology. In the beginning I had big fears concerning this course. I was very fortunate to find a tutor close to where I live through WyzAnt, her name is Jennifer B. She really came through for me with flying colors to make it her mission to help me to succeed in this course. Jennifer came to my rescue and into my home twice a week for nine weeks straight, and she is always punctual with our sessions. It was comforting having Jennifer by my side checking my homework, answering my questions, as well as sitting through a whole hour of online seminars discussing applied statistics for psychology each of the nine weeks that she came to my home. I am really impressed with Jennifer due to the fact that she knew all there was to know about statistics and more. It’s one thing to "know your stuff", but effectively explaining it to someone who has questions about it is another thing. Jennifer has great communication skills and does very well at explaining the results of my statistical analysis. Jennifer is very professional, she is patient but firm, polite, smart, helpful, and encouraging. It has been ten weeks and now the course is completed. I received an outstanding "A" for my final grade and I owe a lot of this success to Jennifer's assistance. I am really glad that my first experience with a tutor coming to my home was Jennifer. I will not hesitate to request for Jennifer B. as my next tutor, because she is the best!

Flexible and helpful tutor

Jennifer was so patient while we figured out a schedule and location. Then when she showed up to tutor math, my daughter asked for help in English. Amazingly, Jennifer was also able to help in English! She offered in help in biology as well. My daughter is taking chemistry, and Jennifer was humble enough to acknowledge she is not the one to help in that subject. The best testament to Jennifer is that my daughter said she liked her. Jennifer wrote a nice summary about she and my daughter went over in the session. We are so happy to have landed upon Jennifer!

She Knows Her Stuff

Jennifer is good at speaking math to 'non-math" types. I have confidence in her knowledge and her appreciation for what my goals are. I really had trouble with the concept of probability and she helped me start to comprehend it.

Very knowledgeable tutor. Goes straight to the point.

Reviewed my Excel homework hypothesis tests for a population proportion and for a population mean. I did some mistakes and she fixed them. I got 16 out of 16! Also, on my Statlab homework.

Extremely Patient

Jennifer is an extremely knowledgable tutor. When I contacted Jennifer I was not confident in my statistics ability and was halfway through my college quarter with a failing grade. I needed to pass my statistics class in order to graduate, and Jennifer was able to help make that happen! I went from failing my quizzes and midterms to receiving a 100% on a quiz and Bs on the last midterm and final!! Jennifer was extremely accommodating with my hectic college and work schedule. She was patient and thorough when I was struggling with a concept, and wouldn't stop explaining it until I completely understood. Overall, Jennifer was extremely helpful and an amazing tutor. Without her I would not have understood statistics and passed the class with a much higher grade than I thought was possible in the beginning.

Jennifer is very knowledgeable with statistics

Jennifer is very knowledgeable with most topics of statistics and is very patient. She explains how we arrived at the answer and when to test for a z or t test. She also shows how to run the test on a T-84 plus calculator which is very helpful.
