I am an experienced math and statistics tutor with more than 16 years of tutoring experience and over 2,400 hours completed through Wyzant. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton, where my studies also included statistics and finance. I have worked with students from middle school through college, both one-on-one and in classroom settings, and I have experience teaching students with a wide range of ability levels and learning styles.

I tutor Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Probability, Statistics, and related subjects, along with test preparation for exams such as the SAT, ACT, PSAT, GRE, GMAT, and ASVAB. My approach is patient, clear, and methodical. I break difficult problems into manageable steps, identify where a student’s understanding begins to break down, and explain concepts in different ways until they make sense. I want students to understand why a method works rather than simply memorize a set of steps.

My background also includes applied mathematics, statistics, data analysis, and scientific research. I have worked with R, Python, and SQL, and I completed a NASA SOFIA research internship involving mathematical and statistical analysis of flight data. That experience helps me connect classroom mathematics to real-world applications. Whether a student is trying to catch up, improve a grade, prepare for an important exam, or strengthen advanced math skills, my goal is to build both understanding and confidence.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have worked with many students on test preparation, English, grammar, and reading comprehension. I can help students with grammar rules, sentence structure, punctuation, usage, and the kinds of editing questions that appear throughout the ACT English section. I also help students recognize common patterns in the questions so they can work more quickly and avoid unnecessary mistakes. My goal is to make the section feel more predictable and help students improve both accuracy and confidence.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I earned a scholarship in part because of my ACT performance, and I have worked with many students on test preparation since then. I can help students improve their ACT scores by strengthening the underlying math and English skills while also teaching strategies for working through the test more efficiently. I also tutor SAT preparation, so I am familiar with the similarities and differences between the two exams. My goal is to help students understand the material, avoid common mistakes, and feel more confident on test day.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have worked with many students on test preparation, reading comprehension, English, and grammar. I can help students improve at reading passages efficiently, finding the information they need, and recognizing what a question is really asking. ACT Reading can feel rushed because of the time limit, so I also work on pacing and strategies for avoiding unnecessary mistakes. My goal is to help students become faster, more accurate, and more confident on the reading section.
Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator

I love Illustrator; it is a very powerful vector drawing program, but it is not always easy to master. There are many hidden tricks and methods which will allow you to create whatever you want in vector form with greater ease and control. Contact me if you want a reliable and effective tutor for this subject.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have used Photoshop for many years and know a lot of tricks to allow you to do nearly anything you want in this program. If you want something done in Photoshop and do not know how, get in touch with me.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 to middle school, high school, and college-level students. Over the years, I have learned where students commonly get stuck or confused and how to explain those ideas in different ways. I use that experience to help students understand the material, build stronger problem-solving skills, and develop strategies that will help them succeed in Algebra 1. I also want students to leave the course with a solid foundation for the math they will take next.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

From polynomials to functions to graphs, I can help make Algebra 2 make sense and even make it a little fun. I have helped many students improve their understanding, study skills, and test scores in this subject. I explain topics in different ways until we find an approach that makes sense to the student. If earlier algebra skills are weak, I can also help identify those gaps and work on them as we go.
ASVAB

ASVAB

I have worked with many students on test preparation and have had success helping students improve their scores. I can help with the math, arithmetic reasoning, and problem-solving skills that are especially important on the ASVAB. I have also helped students reach the scores they needed to qualify for the military paths they wanted. One student I worked with scored well enough to get stationed in Hawaii.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is a broad subject that builds on algebra and trigonometry, beginning with concepts such as limits and infinite series before moving into derivatives and integration. More advanced courses may include partial derivatives, multivariable integration, differential equations, and differential operators. Because calculus depends so heavily on earlier math, weaknesses in algebra, functions, or trigonometry can make the subject much harder than it needs to be. I help students identify and strengthen those weak areas while also working through the calculus itself. My goal is to help students understand the ideas behind the methods rather than simply memorize procedures.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have tutored students in the area of Discrete Mathematics for over five years. It is one of the core parts of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum at my university. I can help with simple tricks to build up arithmetic skills, explain how sets and numbers work, from fractions to exponents. I will help make this subject both rewarding and fun.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and more than 10 years of experience tutoring students at many different levels, including students who struggle with math and students with learning differences. I have a variety of ways to explain concepts, along with games and activities that can make math feel less intimidating and more approachable. My goal is to help students build confidence while strengthening the basic skills they will need for later math.
Finance

Finance

My undergraduate degree in mathematics came with a cognate in business finance. I’ve also taken some graduate-level courses on business finance. I can help with the equations in applications.
Geography

Geography

I love Geography, from maps, and countries to understanding the way the Earth works. If you need help in this area get in touch with me.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry can be a really fun area of math because so much of it is visual and puzzle-like. I can help with geometric proofs, as well as explaining how circles, triangles, polygons, and other shapes work in two and three dimensions. I also help students connect the diagrams to the algebra behind them, since that is often where things start to get confusing. If you are struggling with Geometry, I will work with you to make the ideas clearer and easier to follow.
GMAT

GMAT

I have more than 10 years of tutoring experience and have worked with students preparing for the GMAT and other major standardized tests. I can help students strengthen the math, reasoning, reading, and test-taking skills needed to improve their scores. For the quantitative section, I focus on the algebra, arithmetic, word problems, and data interpretation that tend to give students the most trouble. I also help students develop better pacing, recognize common question patterns, and avoid mistakes that can cost valuable points.
Grammar

Grammar

I can help break down complex sentences, explain the basics about core grammar rules and agreement for tense, singular and plural and similar. I can explain when to use a colon and semi colon, how to avoid run on sentences and sentence fragments.
GRE

GRE

I took the GRE during my final year as an undergraduate and scored above the 90th percentile across all sections of the exam. Since then, I have worked with students on math, English, reading, writing, and test preparation. I can help with both the quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE, as well as the essay portion. I focus on improving the underlying skills while also teaching strategies that can help students work more efficiently and avoid common mistakes.
Logic

Logic

Mastering proofs and analysis along with the formal logic behind mathematics has been a core part of my training in mathematics. I have tutored many students in the area of Math logic, and can help you or your child in this subject. I can help make understanding math logic easier by explaining how to set up proofs, what strategies to use when doing proofs, and what to look for and what to avoid.
LSAT

LSAT

I have tutored many students for the LSAT, and my BA in mathematics shapes how I teach it: the test rewards seeing structure rather than memorizing content. In Logical Reasoning, I help students separate conclusions from premises, find the gap the author jumps over, and recognize the flaw patterns the test reuses. In Reading Comprehension, I focus on mapping a passage’s structure and purpose instead of trying to retain every detail. I also build targeted reference sheets and practice sets around the specific patterns each student is missing.
Macintosh

Macintosh

I have used Macs for over 20 years. Currently, I run Lion on a desktop Mac, and have a laptop, too. I have used it for graphic design apps, writing reports, presentations, and writing math papers.
Physics

Physics

Physics and math are integrally linked; I am proficient at both. I have helped explain these concepts to many students over the years. I can help explain in apply the various formulas used. I can help in such areas as mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity. I can also help in astronomy.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra prepares students for one of the most useful, challenging, and applied areas of mathematics: Algebra. It brings together fractions, ratios, integers, decimals, factorization, negative numbers, natural numbers, and all the other good stuff that makes mathematics work. I help students build a strong foundation in these skills so Algebra does not feel like such a huge jump. If there are weak spots in the basics, we can find them, work through them, and make the next level of math much easier to handle.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus helps build the algebra and trigonometry foundation students need before moving into calculus. Calculus expects a strong level of competence in these areas, so weaknesses in algebra or trigonometry can make the next course much more difficult. I help students strengthen those skills while also working through the current precalculus material. My goal is to make sure students understand the ideas well enough that they are prepared for calculus rather than simply getting through the class.
Probability

Probability

I can help you understand probability and do well in your course. Probability can be a confusing subject without a good teacher or tutor, and many students struggle with it. Over the years, I have learned a number of ways to make probability easier to follow and understand. I focus on helping students see the logic behind the problems so they are not just memorizing formulas, but actually understanding what they are doing.
PSAT

PSAT

I have over 10 years of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, GRE, and GMAT. I can help students strengthen the math, reading, grammar, and test-taking skills that are important on the PSAT. I also help students recognize common question types, manage their time, and avoid mistakes that cost points. Since the PSAT is also good preparation for the SAT, I work on skills that will carry over to the next exam.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I did very well on the SAT in both math and verbal when I took the exam. Since then, I have studied mathematics at a much deeper level and have helped many students improve their math skills and test performance. I can help students with the algebra, geometry, problem solving, and test-taking strategies that show up throughout the SAT Math section. If you want to improve your SAT Math score, I will work with you to find the areas costing you points and help you get stronger in them.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have worked with many students over the past decade on test preparation, English, grammar, and reading comprehension. I can help students identify the kinds of questions they are missing and teach better methods for reading passages, finding evidence, and understanding what a question is really asking. My goal is to make the reading section feel less confusing and more systematic. With the right approach, students can improve both their comprehension and their confidence on the test.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics and Probability are two of my primary areas of study, and I have extensive experience helping students who are struggling with these subjects. I focus on helping students understand the basic concepts as well as how to apply statistics to real-world situations. I enjoy tutoring statistics because it gives me the opportunity to take a subject that can sometimes seem confusing and make it much easier to understand and follow. My goal is not just to show students how to solve a particular problem, but to help them understand what they are doing and why it works.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have helped many students with trigonometry, including how to use sine, cosine, tangent, and other trigonometric properties to solve problems involving angles and triangles. I also help students understand how trigonometry connects back to algebra and geometry. Those connections can make the subject much easier to understand instead of feeling like a collection of unrelated formulas. If there are gaps in the algebra or geometry needed for a problem, I can help with those as well.

My hero!

Steven really saved the day. I was dumb and procrastinated and waited until 4 days prior to the due date of my assignment. I selected instant book and he was the first one to help me. He's very knowledgeable and was patient with me. My second session he fit me in when he had a slight break and we were able to finish my assignment. He saved me because I really screwed up on one of the problems. Math is not my strong suit and this was for an online college class. I will definitely do another session for my last assignment for this class. Mahalo Steven!
