Qualifications for “Math”

I recently took the GRE exam and scored a cumulative 326, 159 in Verbal and 167 in Mathematics, out of a possible 170 in each. My scores rank high in both categories, although I prefer to work specifically with math students. I will likely take the exam again and I hope to get a perfect score on the math and over 160 in the verbal section. I have years of math teaching and tutoring experience at all levels and love to work with students on test prep strategies, knowledge, and general wisdom.

The key to math is the world of possibility it opens up. Since we're talking about simple, but elusive concepts based on the real world, I stress putting logical ideas together and understanding how to express the meaning of mathematics in accessible ways. Numbers, calculations, and variables are just some of tools we can utilize, and math is the canvas -- the language -- between the tools.

About Me:
--------------
National AP Scholar (2000), National Merit Scholar (2000) before attending UC Berkeley ('05). After working in SF & India, I began tutoring calculus and algebra in the Los Angeles area for high-school curriculums, as well as for the AP, SAT I, SAT II, and ACT exams until 2012. I taught undergraduate courses and labs at California State University Channel Islands & Cal Lutheran University (2012 - 2015). Currently, I work for a supply chain consulting firm handling product management duties at Nvidia. In the past, I was a former senior executive for a global manufacturing startup based in India for 3 enlightening years.

My Educational Background:
----------------------------------------
BA Political Science - UC Berkeley
MS Mathematics - California State University, Channel Islands
MBA Strategy & Entrepreneurship - Indian School of Business

Understanding math depends on understanding the problem as much as the concepts, steps, or calculation.

A roadmap to A-ha! : Practice == > Confidence ==> Achievement ==> Curiosity ==> A-ha!

My mission is based on student learning, not just getting good grades or scores: get active and voice your opinions! Feel free to be specific. It helps immensely to know our end goals to determine how to approach our time constraints and your expectations. We can just adjust our approach or cancel charges if we could have done better.

Elementary Math

I have been tutoring and teaching young mathematics students for over 5 years, not to mention the joy of helping interested young relatives grasp the fundamental concepts of math. Learning mathematics should start at a young age, and cementing a firm grasp on the basic concepts is one important step in having a strong understanding of mathematics throughout one's life. I taught for 2 years at Kumon working with young students just beginning to master the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as other elementary topics. I was both a manager and instructor at Mathnasium, where young students of age 4 and up learn the fundamentals through guided learning activities, math games, and worksheets. We use the number sense approach, which teaches the value of understanding HOW numbers work and WHY we use them the way we do. I love working with young students and seeing their joy in wrapping their minds around an interesting math problem! I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a Bachelor's in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University.

Teaching and tutoring algebra is a great love of mine. I have taught algebra at the university level for over 3 years, and tutored algebra for a number of companies and independently for over 5 years. I genuinely relish each opportunity. Algebra is one of the most captivating subjects in math because it is the first real journey into abstract mathematics beyond calculations and basic tips & tricks. Observing a student really grasp algebra is as rewarding an experience a tutor or teacher can ever have. I have a BA from UC Berkeley in Political Science and an MS from Cal State Channel Islands in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics. I have taught calculus and algebra for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands at Cal Lutheran University. I was both a National AP Scholar and a National Merit Scholar during my high school studies.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have spent countless hours teaching and tutoring algebra 2. In the past 6 years, I have compiled an abundance of experience working with algebra 2 students. I have spent 8 years tutoring algebra in one-on-one settings for 3 different tutoring companies. In addition, I have extensive experience tutoring all subjects privately. Algebra is a foundational discipline in the study of mathematics, and it is essential to be fluent with algebra in order to succeed in more advanced mathematics endeavors. I love teaching algebra. In fact, I won the Mathematics award at my high school as a senior because of my interest in algebra and its implications for future mathematics study. Algebra is the core subject of abstract mathematics. I enjoy it so much that I have taught for 4 years at the university level at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University. These courses were also predominantly based on Algebra 2 concepts. I think that any student can benefit from committed practice and insightful guidance, and I am fortunate to have this opportunity. The courses I teach and have taught afford me the wonderful chance to reflect about mathematics at its most fundamental and celebrate the success of my students in mastering the ideas of algebra in lecture and office hours. The key qualities any great tutor or teacher must possess for a discipline like algebra are patience, resolve, and eloquence. With these tools, a great teacher can inspire students to excel in future mathematical journeys as well! I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a Bachelor's in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is easily my favorite mathematical discipline. It combines the abstract thinking of algebra, the real-world application of engineering and physics, and the elegance of language. I believe that I can demonstrate to any student how interesting calculus really is and in the process develop a total mastery of the topic. I received a score of 5 on the AP Calculus B/C exam, and was deemed both a National AP Scholar as well as National Merit Scholar in high school. I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a BA from UC Berkeley in Political Science. I have taught calculus and algebra for over 5 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University, as well. I have been a one-on-one (as well as group) tutor in calculus and algebra for over 5 years at several tutoring companies, as well as independently.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is the study of shapes, dimensions, and orientation in environments of varying structure. Understanding geometry and the rules that govern it is a skill that can be learned by refining how one looks at the world around all of us. In the past 6 years, I have tutored students in algebra, geometry, calculus, and multi-variable calculus. My experience is abundant with regards to all age levels, including adults of over 40. Since I believe in teaching mathematics in an applied way, my tutoring approach is particularly well-suited for improvement in geometry. Teaching and tutoring algebra is a great love of mine. I have taught algebra at the university level for over 4 years, and tutored all subjects from elementary school math to multivariable calculus for a number of companies and independently for over 5 years. Prealgebra is one of chief importance in the growth of budding mathematics students. Since algebra is the first journey into real abstract mathematics for most students, having the fundamental skills of prealgebra is essential to grasping algebraic concepts and making the necessary intellectual leaps to truly understand the more elusive mathematics to come. Patience, motivation, and the link between basic mathematics and the real world can make this transition a wonderful one for any student. I am an MS graduate in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a BA graduate in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus at Cal Lutheran University and Cal State Channel Islands for over 4 years.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Since calculus is my favorite mathematical field, I have a strong sense of importance for precalculus ideas. Precalculus prepares a mathematics student for the abstract leap needed to fully make sense of calculus. I love teaching precalculus and calculus because it forces any student to think about mathematics in a whole new, but fascinating way. Any student will see the beauty of this field if given the right kind of instruction. Precalculus material often tends to be the first opportunity for a student to really get excited about mathematics, and as a teacher, it is a wonderful opportunity for myself to help inspire that enthusiasm. I am chiefly qualified for calculus and precalculus guidance. More specifically, I taught pre-calculus at Cal Lutheran University and calculus at Cal State Channel Islands. I received a perfect score of 5 on the AP Calculus B/C exam, which helped me earn the distinction of National AP Scholar (the highest Advanced Placement honor possible in the United States). I also received a perfect 800 on the SAT IIC Math exam. I love teaching and tutoring for standardized exams as they are as much based on style and technique as knowledge and understanding. Passing on these secrets of great test-taking is a real joy! In addition to my love of teaching mathematics, I am skilled in test-taking myself. I was designated a National Merit Scholar as well as National AP Scholar as a high school senior. I received a perfect score of 800 on the SAT II Math exam, a 770 on the SAT I Math Exam, and perfect score of 5 on the AP Calculus B/C Exam. I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a Bachelor's in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University.
ACT Science,

ACT Science

I have been teaching ACT, SAT, and SAT II prep for over 5 years. My experience includes one-on-one tutoring with reputable test prep institutions, such as Princeton Review, Mathnasium, and Tried and True Tutoring. These positions have helped me cultivate a strong sense of how a student can improve their test-taking skills and what teaching methods will best take advantage of their inherent abilities. I give students the insights to understand the concepts, but focus on adapting approaches to standardized exam questions in order to maximize efficiency and accuracy. My standardized test scores are a testament to this. I received a 770 on the SAT I Math exam, a perfect 800 on the SAT II Math exam, and was both a National Merit Scholar and National AP Scholar in high school. I also received a perfect score on the PSAT Math. In addition, I received a 760 on the SAT II Chemistry. I understand how students can improve for standardized exams and how I can help them. I've had students increase their scores significantly (to perfect scores, in fact) and any student that I've had the pleasure to work with has experienced dramatic improvement. I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a Bachelor's in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University.
GRE,

GRE

I recently took the GRE exam and scored a cumulative 326, 159 in Verbal and 167 in Mathematics, out of a possible 170 in each. My scores rank high in both categories, although I prefer to work specifically with math students. I will likely take the exam again and I hope to get a perfect score on the math and over 160 in the verbal section. I have years of math teaching and tutoring experience at all levels and love to work with students on test prep strategies, knowledge, and general wisdom.
PSAT,

PSAT

One might say that I am almost overqualified to teach and tutor for the PSAT. I have a wealth of experience working for a number of companies teaching SAT and ACT Prep, and have taught test prep for well over 5 years. The PSAT, like the SAT and ACT, is a standardized exam taken in high schools that contribute a number of simple opportunities for young students. First, students that score well on the PSAT can earn a scholarship. Next, they can ascertain what level they are currently at in terms of their SAT score. Lastly, the PSAT can be a strong boost in confidence, if prepared for correctly. I have mastered the skills necessary to excel at the PSAT and have numerous qualifications that attest to this fact. I was a National Merit Scholar in high school, and had numerous full ride scholarships offered to me as a result of my score on the PSAT. National Merit Scholar is the highest distinction given to PSAT test-takers nationwide. I was also a National AP Scholar (the highest distinction given to AP students nationwide). In addition, I currently teach pre-calculus at the university level. Any student can make use of the PSAT and even earn some money in the process by challenging themselves to excel and developing the confidence to move forward at the next level.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am extraordinarily qualified to tutor SAT Math. I have been tutoring SAT Math for over 5 years. I love teaching and tutoring for standardized exams as they are as much based on style and technique as knowledge and understanding. As with the PSAT, passing on these secrets of great test-taking is a real joy and mastering those techniques is a skill any student can learn! It is a wonderful feeling for a dedicated student to go into a standardized exam knowing they're going to ace it, and I have helped students reach this peak many times. In terms of my relevant test scores, I have done well in every exam that relates to the SAT Math. I received a score of 770 on SAT I Math exam. I also achieved a perfect score of 800 on the SAT IIC Math exam. As a result, I was designated as a National Merit Scholar (top 1% of PSAT). I hold a Master's in Applied & Theoretical Mathematics from Cal State Channel Islands and a Bachelor's in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I taught algebra and calculus for over 4 years at Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Lutheran University.

Dev is a wonderful tutor!

Dev A. is a wonderful tutor. Because of his commitment to tutor my grandson, he got an A+ for his semester grade in calculus. My grandson went from dropping the class and getting an F the first semester to an A+ for the second semester. Because Dev did such a great job of getting him on track with his tutoring and advice, it got him motivated to apply himself not only in calculus but in his other classes as well. I highly recommend Dev for his tutoring because he gets great results from his students.

Great tutor!

He took the time to explain each concept to make sure I understood the questions I had. Overall, his teaching style was clear and effective despite a few technical issues on my part. It was a useful session.

Best tutor

Dev is a phenomenal tutor!! My 5th grader was struggling with decimals and fractions when we approached Dev for help. He took an excellent approach of making her understand how numbers work rather than just teaching calculation techniques. Dev taught my kid how to relate math to real life applications. She feels confident every time she walks out of the class with Dev. He also provided us with guidance on how to help her with everyday math practice. He helps her prepare for tests and we have seen great improvement in my kid. Our family has enjoyed getting to know Dev. He is creative, sincere, and thoughtful, and I highly recommend him as an excellent math tutor. He’s fantastic!!

Patient and effective tutor

I messaged a dozen tutors 2 nights before my daughter's algebra 2/pre-calc final because she was in a complete panic and needed help desperately. This was no small task as my daughter needed literally hours of help. One Wyzant tutor agreed to meet with her and then did not show up, wasting an entire evening of her limited time. Dev came to the rescue and not only spent hours online tutoring her, working late into the night, but he also calmed her down and gave her confidence. She only needed a 55% on the final exam to pass the class and that all she wanted at that point but felt it was impossible based on the practice exams. Much to her amazement she actually scored in the top quarter of the class and ended up with a B in a class she had no hope of passing before tutoring with Dev! I cannot say enough about how fortunate she was that Dev made himself available with no prior notice and basically reviewed the whole class in an evening. He is worth every penny!
