My nephew did long term tutoring with Barb. She is outstanding. She was there with him in each moment, catching the difficulties and continually breaking down the learning process into smaller and smaller pieces until he could find the part he could do, gradually building more and more confidence and skill. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I teach the English language in a systematic way, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. This method begins at the beginning, stressing letter/sound correspondence and building to word and sentence level. Every aspect of language usage is addressed - reading, writing and speaking. My credentials include an M.A. degree in speech communication, 7 years directing ESL programming for an adult literacy center, and CALP (Certified Academic Language Practitioner) status.
I have eight years professional experience using multisensory phonics methods to teach struggling readers. For seven years I managed the state's oldest and largest volunteer literacy agency, which provided phonics instruction to hundreds of adult students per year. I personally tutored students, and arranged for staff and volunteers to be trained in multisensory phonics tutoring methods. I now tutor dyslexic children at the Masonic Childrens' Learning Center where I am part way through a one year credentialing process. I hold a license from the State of Wisconsin to teach multisensory phonics at a Milwaukee Charter School. I am an active member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, the International Dyslexia Association, and the Wisconsin Reading Coalition.
