I have tutored over one hundred students in the Northern Virginia area, in math, statistics, economics, writing, and other subjects. My knowledge of the way these subjects are taught in local schools helps me quickly answer students' questions and get them immediately closer to their goals.

Math was never "easy" for me, so I understand when people struggle with the subject. However, I know that students can also make significant improvements in their grades with focused practice and helpful instruction. I aim to make math less intimidating, so students no longer dread going to class.

I also have extensive experience as a writer. I have published many articles and won awards for my writing, including an award for investigative journalism.

I am available to tutor many technical subjects, including math courses for high school and college, statistics, and economics. I have also worked with many graduate students and professionals on statistical projects, especially using SAS.

I have degrees in math and economics from Virginia Tech, Phi Beta Kappa. I have work experience in the U.S. Senate, at a political magazine, and about a decade as a statistician and programmer in the federal government. I have published articles in popular outlets like The Guardian, as well as academic journals such as the American Economic Association's Papers & Proceedings. I recently co-authored a report from Harvard Law School on the Midwest farm economy.

I can provide references upon request.

*** In most cases, I can only schedule lessons after I receive a specific assignment, problems, code, etc. to cover in the first lesson. Screenshots of problems are fine. ***

Baseball

Baseball

I have been a passionate baseball fan since 6th grade. I played varsity baseball for two years in high school and have coached for over two years in Arlington. I also founded a baseball statistics club at Virginia Tech and published original research that was featured on Baseball Think Factory and other aggregators.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I earned an A- in introduction to Java in college. I used Mathematica as my primary programming language as I earned my math degree, including several projects. I programmed do files for STATA in my undergraduate research and for over a year professionally. I taught myself HTML and completed Codecademy's course on CSS. I also worked with MS Access code when I interned at a financial services firm. I have experience using and tutoring Scratch, a programming interface designed for children. I am also a fairly advanced user of Microsoft Excel.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I received an A in differential equations. I used differential equations in a course in dynamical systems and a few advanced economics courses (development, advanced macro), in which I also received As. I also tutored differential equations for several years in college.
Guitar

Guitar

I have played guitar for over 9 years, including public performances and with professional musicians. I have successfully taught people alternate picking, basic music theory (keys, timing, chords, modes), and dozens of popular songs. I can read tablature and know over 100 songs by heart.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I received a B in Honors Linear Algebra and an A- in Linear Algebra, a proofs-based course. I used linear algebra to solve problems in a course on Dynamical Systems. I also used some Linear Algebra techniques in my research on baseball and my paid economics research.
Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access

I used Microsoft Access on a regular basis while I interned at an investment advisory over several summers. I also wrote and edited macros to facilitate a data retrieval process the company relied on.
SAS

SAS

I was employed professionally as a SAS programmer for nine years. I have developed dozens of complex SAS systems for processing large datasets. I have also significantly reduced runtimes and the complexity of many such systems.

The best possible experience you could hope for with a tutor.

When my high school son was struggling severely to make a D in geometry when he first starting his tutoring sessions with Bryce. In fact, my son and I had already resigned ourselves to the fact that he would have to retake geometry again next year. I decided to sign him up for tutoring so that he would at least pick up some basic understanding of the subject and it would put him in better position the second time around in geometry to succeed in both learning and a strong grade. In a matter of 4-6 weeks, my son has gone from dreading geometry class and barely passing the subject to making high Bs or As on all tests, quizzes and homework and looking forward to the class. He's transitioned from dreading to receive test grades to bugging the teacher to grade the tests more quickly so he can see if he made an A. On a personal level, my son very much liked Bryce from the very first session and was relieved in the first couple of sessions to find Bryce to be very patient and supportive. As a parent I have always found Bryce to be very accessible and responsive to any and all inquiries. His technical skills and personality have made for the most positive and successful tutoring experience my son or I could have hoped for.

Best Economics Tutor Out There

Bryce was very patient and knows his stuff when it comes to economics. He makes the information very digestible and is able to translate challenging subjects into very comprehensible information by relating the content to real world scenarios. Thanks for your help Bryce.

Patient and thorough!

Bryce provided an excellent Algebra 2 tutoring session for my 10th grade daughter. He was clear and thorough in his explanations and patient and encouraging in his delivery. He reviewed foundational concepts and introduced new ones, helping her grasp complicated problems and gain more confidence.

Very patient and very knowledgeable

Bryce top my son business statistics. Math is not his favorite subject, nor does it come the easiest to him. My son said that Bryce made him open up to the concepts. I consider that a huge win. We will be using him for the rest of the semester.

Great tutor... both knowledgeable and patient.

Bryce really helps my son both understand new concepts and any material that he fails to understand at school. He has been invaluable in helping my son learn Algebra 2.

Very helpful with my sons and very flexible

Bryce has been very helpful with my son who had been struggling with trigonometry. His grades have gone from high Cs to low As. My other son has been struggling with Prob/Stats and Bryce has been flexible enough to help him too. My sons say they understand the information much better after meeting with Bryce.

Great tutor!

Bryce is currently tutoring 2 of my children in Math. They both are responding very well to his instruction and just after 2 sessions I have seen improvement in their grades.

Just what we needed!

My daughter really needed someone to help her work through her Calculus assignments and help prep her for tests. Bryce is patient, and always talks to her to get her to put into words why she is approaching a problem in a particular way. Talking through the problems has really helped her improve her overall performance. Since starting with Bryce, her grade has risen to a solid B from a pretty low C and she's feeling much more confident. Bryce's familiarity with the Arlington County curriculum is very useful.
