Hi!

My name is Dave Manning, and I want to live in a world where most people wake up feeling inspired by meaningful work, connected with their communities, motivated to become better, and excited for what's ahead. That's why I tutor part-time (in addition to my own full-time work) on Wyzant– I love to share my experiences with anyone that might benefit from them in pursuit of their own meaningful aspirations.

I am a self-employed strategic planning consultant for nonprofits, which lets me draw from my experiences as a full-time high school teacher, various management roles in the private sector, and my finance undergraduate education. I also have a Masters in Education.

I laugh a lot, bring humor to my lessons, am flexible and non-judgmental, plus truly care about your success at whatever it is you're trying to improve on. There are so many people out there NOT trying to get better, and you ARE, so that deserves all of my attention and support.

Have a Story-Worthy Week,
Dave

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I LOVE math. In addition to getting a 100% on the Wyzant quiz without using paper or studying, back in high school I earned all advanced on the Massachusetts state exam (and took AP Calculus 1 and 2). I proceeded to take math in college up to honors qualitative methods with calculus; Algebra 1 is fun and easy for me. My experience as a high school teacher (Business) with a M.Ed in Secondary Education (ie, high school) makes me a great candidate to teach this with a different perspective than might be received from a current math teacher tutoring on the side. Don't you want to hear it explained differently than in the books and classroom? If that worked you'd be getting it already :)
Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding

I am a certified personal trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), with endorsements from Functional Movement Screen (FMS), kettlebells, and TRX. I was Medical Fitness Manager of a 100,000 square foot health club, where my responsibilities included technical staff training for the entire fitness department, personal training program development, meal planning, and similar duties. From there, I moved up to General Manager of a medical fitness / physical therapy clinic, where I acquired more training skills and fitness aptitude. Personally, I have been lifting for many years and am proficient in the major barbell / powerlifting lifts, adhering to the Starting Strength method.
Business

Business

I majored in business from Babson (#1 school in US for Entrepreneurship) for 20+ years, worked in business for a decade, taught business for three years, and am currently developing my own business.
Career Development

Career Development

As an undergraduate student, I worked in the Center for Career Development at Babson College. Since that time I have transitioned several times between positions, companies, and entire industries. Each of those required calculated strategies, research, negotiations, networking, and even multiple career changer workshops. I recently taught a "College and Career Planning" course for three years.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As a business teacher in Massachusetts, one of the courses I developed and taught for years to hundreds of students was called College & Career Planning. We used "reverse engineering" to begin with the end in mind, and identify career paths and necessary college planning to best match a student with their desired life. This involved personality testing, skills development, in-depth school comparisons, networking with alumni, the application process, and personal statements/essays plus admittance interview preparation.

Marketing

Marketing

I currently teach a Marketing course. Also, as Leasing Broker for commercial real estate, I had to market a variety of business opportunities, spaces, etc. Later in my career, as manager of two medically based fitness centers, I had to market our programs to the public and our staff and services to the physician community.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I love prealgebra and considered teaching middle school math as an alternative to teaching business. The logical reasoning developed in prealgebra is about as advanced as most people ever will need in life, and those wishing to build upon it need a great foundation. I see it as incredibly important. Personally, I advanced through AP calculus in high school and honors quantitative methods with calculus in college, and therefore am quite comfortable with prealgebra. I am in the process of becoming certified as a middle school math teacher, too, as backup for business in case I move from my school district.

Highly recommend

Dave was great to work with - and fun. He helped me understand new things quickly by building upon what I already knew. I liked his style of using metaphors to simplify things, too. Highly recommend.

My son has needed help with college accounting and finance courses. Dave was able to give him a much better understanding of the subjects. My son raved about his wealth of knowledge and patient teaching style.
