Hello! I am a retired math and English teacher with an M.Ed. from Furman University and I am National Board certified. I have extensive experience teaching English, math, and gifted students. Hello! I am a retired math and English teacher with an M.Ed. from Furman University and I am National Board certified. I have extensive experience teaching English, math, and gifted students. I love to tutor. Before my daughter was born I tutored over 150 students in a range of subjects from elementary reading to college statistics. I didn't advertise then; students came to me by word-of-mouth. Now that I am retired after 32 years and have relocated to a different state, I would like to increase the number of students that I tutor. Online tutoring has been fun and very effective!
My gift is breaking down complex concepts and making them easy to understand while creating a safe and friendly atmosphere that encourages students to take risks. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring because it is so rewarding to witness the "a-ha" moment in a student's eyes when it all comes together. Sometimes it is an audible "Oh!" that makes my heart soar. Additionally, building a relationship with a student over time and correcting misconceptions or missed skills is also rewarding.

I taught mainly algebra and language arts to gifted children for over 25 years. I have had experiences in a variety of settings, such as a children's home, summer schools, GED classes, and even teaching basic skills in a manufacturing plant for several years.

My own personality type is warm-hearted, patient, a life-long learner (I love to research and spend hours a weeks doing so), honest, and artistically inclined. I am a perfectionist, but only with myself.

If I sound like a good match for you or your child, please e-mail me. Generally I will respond within a few hours.

Thanks, and I hope you choose WyzAnt for your tutoring needs. It is a great company and you won't be disappointed.

Godsend

Barbara is the best choice that we have made for our child. She is exceeding our expectations. Our second grader just adores her and is making wonderful strides in math and reading. We could not ask for a better person to entrust our child's education to.

Patient and responsive to my needs

I needed to learn distance, speed, time calculations for a boat navigation test. I was struggling because the calculations for boating have unusual requirements. Barbara took a minute to study the unusual requirements and adjusted her tutoring to teach me how to do it. She was very clear, patient, encouraging and adaptable. Highly recommend!

Patient and productive

Barb is a responsive, patient, and very productive tutor. Barb responded immediately to my inquiry and has made herself available around our tight schedule. She is helping my son prepare for the SAT and brush up on reading and math skills for college. She is able to get him focused and engaged, which is a difficult task. She has a pleasant personality and a good working relationship with my son. It is very important that the two feel comfortable working together and are able to accomplish the task at hand. I would highly recommend Barb and look forward to continuing to use her for my son.
