It is a true joy for me to work with students from other countries and help them develop their English language skills. For eight years I taught ESOL classes to adults from dozens of countries: China, Colombia, Iraq, Mexico, Laos, Russia, and more. The students ranged in experience from literacy to college-prep, and were from 18 to 72 years old. No matter their age, native language or culture, I enjoyed hearing their stories of travel, family and how they settled into their new homes and...
No matter their age, native language or culture, I enjoyed hearing their stories of travel, family and how they settled into their new homes and navigated life in a new country. It was a privilege for me to study with them whether we were practicing pronunciation, conjugating verbs, writing journals, or studying pronouns.
When teaching, and now tutoring which I have been doing for about 2 years, the most important ingredient for me is patience. Not only with the students, but the students with themselves. Learning can be frustrating, but it is also very rewarding! Knowing you can write an essay, take a test, or have a conversation in another language is a major accomplishment.
In addition to having patience, I believe it’s important to use students' experiences and interests to help them learn. It is much easier to practice writing when you enjoy and can relate to what you’re writing about! Meeting students where they are is key. Incorporating games and physical activity is another great tool to keep students engaged.
My own experiences as a language student aided me greatly. For four years in high school I studied both Latin and French. And for three years in college, I continued to study French; I relate to students' frustration and enjoyment when learning another language. But no matter the skill, big or small, learned, or how long (or short!) it took to learn it, it is something of which to be proud.
Learning takes time, and it can be challenging. But studying opens up so many opportunities and doors that make the time and effort worth it.
