Hi, I'm Alicia. I have over 10 years of experience in job training and teaching with two plus years teaching environmental science. My supervisors and co-workers would say that I am a highly effective and creative instructor who is very adept at taking subject matter and breaking it down into smaller, more manageable pieces to make the subject easier for students to grasp. Often, co-workers and students ask me to negotiate difficult situations because my problem-solving skills allow me to assess a situation relatively quickly, determine what's needed and address the concerns and problems that are present.

I believe in a caring, student-centered approach to tutoring where the student, parents or guardians and I customize a specific learning plan in order to attain student goals and objectives. By recognizing the "exceptionalities" of each individual student, an effective learning plan can be developed that will help the student be successful regardless of the subject. In addition, I am sensitive to the non-academic challenges that may make learning challenging (i.e., school-related extracurricular activities, job demands, childcare). My tutoring service hours are flexible which allow me to accommodate the most demanding student schedules.

My role as a professional educator is to connect with my students by helping them to increase their confidence and take charge of a subject in which they are struggling. I do this not just by focusing on the subject matter itself but by stimulating their curiosity with real-world examples and applications, focusing on note taking, organizational skills and modeling how I want my students to approach different subjects. I am highly motivated and excited about contributing to the success of all of the students that I tutor.

Biology

Biology

The reason why I feel that I qualified to tutor students in biology is because I hold a master’s degree in environmental management. Environmental management is an interdisciplinary science that incorporates biology, chemistry, physics, and other sciences. When tutoring students in biology, or teaching my own environmental science students, I emphasize the importance of learning vocabulary and terminology to build a foundation for the more difficult concepts that students need to master the course. I've also successfully completed college-level biology courses such as: Biology and the Modern World; Biological Science I and II; Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology I and II.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

The reason why I feel that I am qualified to tutor in Elementary K-6th grade subject matter is largely because of my experience working at the elementary school level as a reading tutor in Westerville while employed as a teaching assistant in the special needs classroom. During this time, I enjoyed working with children in every grade level in both the traditional and special education classrooms. Being able to read is the foundation for every subject taught in a classroom regardless of grade. To this end, I employed the use of flash cards, study buddies (stuffed animals), games, and multimedia tools to sharpen and develop not only reading but math, science, social studies, and history skills with both the mainstream and special education students.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have experience working at the elementary school level as an aide in Westerville City Schools where I had the opportunity to work with students in every grade level. I have also successfully completed several college-level math courses where I even had the opportunity to tutor fellow classmates (e.g., Beginning Algebra I and II; Intermediate Algebra; Technical Math I and II; Calculus I and II; and Calculus for Electronics). When helping students with math, I have found that the best approach is to first assess what a student already knows and use this information to strengthen their foundation before incorporating new concepts or introducing new material. I first incorporated this approach as a volunteer tutor with middle school students who were struggling to pass the math sections of their proficiency tests, then adapted it for use with all grade levels and abilities.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I've enjoyed working with children, teens and adults in every grade level in both the traditional and special education classrooms and in subjects such as science, math, art and social studies. To this end, I employ the use of flash cards, games, study guides, and multimedia tools to sharpen and develop math, science, social studies, and history skills with both the mainstream and special education students. I have a master’s degree in environmental management and a B.S. in Geosciences. I've taken courses in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, atmospheric science, ArcGIS, physics, and geohazards. When helping students with science, I have found that the best approach is to first assess what a student already knows and use this information as a bridge to strengthen their foundation before incorporating new concepts or introducing new material. When tutoring students in science, or teaching my own environmental science students, I emphasize the importance of learning vocabulary and terminology to build a foundation for the more difficult concepts that students need to master their courses.
General Computer

General Computer

As a former college instructor, I encountered students who had never used a computer let alone sent an email or submitted an assignment electronically. To make students with little or no computer experience more comfortable with the use of technology, I implement hands-on activities to teach and practice general computer skills. I first assess what a student already knows to build on that foundation using mini-lessons that cover computer hardware and software. By the time that a student completes tutoring with me, she is able to send and receive documents using email and Microsoft Word, research topics for academic papers, and even put together simple presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Geology

Geology

In addition to having more than 10 years experience in training and substitute teaching, I have two plus years of experience teaching Environmental Science at a local college. I'm continuing to further my education by pursuing a geoscience degree in order to specialize in hydrogeology. Member of Ohio Geological Society and Columbus Rock and Mineral Society. Certifications: Wetland Delineation; Phase I & II/ESA Environmental Impact Assessments.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook are just three of the software programs that I use every day to do things like prepare assignments, deliver lectures, assess learning, and communicate with my students. I have used the Microsoft Office Suite for more almost 20 years now in connection with job duties, learning management systems, training and personal use. One of my goals when teaching a class is to not only deliver subject matter for that specific class but to ensure that my students’ computer skills will enhance their opportunities for employment after graduation.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

This is a software suite that I have had extensive experience with over the last 10 to 15 years. When training other individuals in Microsoft Windows and any of its components, I have found hands-on practice to be most effective -- especially when that practice simulates what the individual will be using Windows for on a daily basis. I assess what the individual already knows about Windows before finding out what they want or need to know. I can then sit down with the trainee and design a custom learning plan to meet their objectives.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

As a college adjunct, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook are just three of the software programs that I use every day to deliver lectures, assess learning, and communicate with my students. I have used the Microsoft Office Suite for more almost 20 years now in connection with job duties, learning management systems, training and personal use. One of my goals when teaching a class is to not only deliver subject matter for that specific class -- whether it’s environmental science or ethics -- but to ensure that my students’ computer skills will enhance their opportunities for employment after graduation. Instruction in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint are the two main programs that I incorporate into my lesson plans in my classes.
Physical Science

Proofreading

Proofreading

If you’re looking for a professional who is adept at producing quality editing work in a timely manner, I can help you stand “head and shoulders” above the competition. I have over 10 years of experience editing: technical reports, newsletters; works of fiction; screenplays; PowerPoint presentations; and research papers. I've "ghost written" columns for public officials in government, and written and edited training manuals.

Awesome tutor!

Alicia is incredibly knowledgeable about environmental science, very patient and friendly. My daughter learned so much in just one session. We will continue using her throughout the entire school year.

Knowledgeable, kind and patient!

Alicia worked with me on an Intro to Geology lab packet that had little to no directions from the instructor. She sent me many valuable links that explained the concepts that allowed me to complete the lab worksheets. While these sheets don't count as a grade, they are the study guide for the lab quiz. Without her help, I would not be ready for the quiz.

Great tutor

Alicia was a great tutor, she went far beyond her requirements to help me. She is a credit to her profession. I would like to work with Alicia again someday but right now I don't have the time or energy.

Fantastic Tutor Made Our 5 Year Old Want to Learn

Ms. Alicia is amazing at finding what works for children needing to learn outside the typical cookie-cutter school environment. Nothing but great things come from our 5 year old after his tutoring lessons.
