Math has always been a fascinating subject for me, and an equalizer across various professions and cultures. All disciplines use math in one form or another, so understanding its rules and applications is important for today's students.
As a Cum Laude mathematics graduate, certificated Math Teacher, and tutor for over 40 years, I've helped many middle- and high-school students gain proficiency with math.
From the first meeting with a student, I establish a "safe" tutoring environment: I don't grade students and I don't judge them. I'm here to help them in those areas where they "just don't get it."
Students have obligations, too: 1) They have to tell me what they don't understand. 2) They have to practice the concepts and skills.
Working this way has helped my students improve their grades and their confidence.
One parent said it best:
"My child used to think that math was difficult and that passing grades were beyond a reasonable goal. My child now feels that math is 'easy' and understands concepts at a much deeper level. I feel this is due to individualized skills and techniques to meet the learning needs of my child. Ms. H has been able to establish a rapport with my child that enables a high degree of comfort, trust, and confidence. My child continually remarks how she can 'trust' Ms. H with giving her confidence in math and better grades."
In addition to review and practice, we discuss the student's goals and career options so that I can describe how math could be applied in those jobs. My careers inside and outside of classroom teaching, in addition to my involvement in many community-wide projects, enables me to relate real-world situations where math is essential.
I'm flexible about where to meet. The location should be a quiet space to minimize distractions. I can work at your house, at a nearby library, or you can come to my office in Red Bank.
As for scheduling, I appreciate your adhering to our agreed-upon times. I understand that unexpected situations can come up and try to be flexible to a reasonable extent. We can arrange a make-up session.
To ensure that I meet your expectations, I ask for both oral and written feedback from parents about the effectiveness of my tutoring.
As a personal bonus, I've learned a great deal from the students I've tutored. I discover the kind of person each one is and am heartened to hear of their plans for the future. I make sure that they are as prepared as possible to reach their goals.
I look forward to hearing from you. Reach out to me soon so, together, we can get your child back on track to confidence and success in his or her math work. For online sessions, I usually charge $30 per hour. For college students, please contact me to discuss a rate adjustment. Many thanks for reaching out to me. Ms. Gayle
My daughter spent the last 2 semesters working with Gayle approx 1 hour a week and RECIEVED her first "A" in math since starting high school.
She even RECIEVED B+ on her final in Algebra 2 /Trig. approaching senior year Gayle succeeded in helping my daughter have straight A's!!
If you have a child who dislikes math because of teachers losing patience instead of building self confidence in Math Gayle is your tutor!
She is patient/kind/proffesional and extremely knowledgeable in Math.
She is prompt and courteous and is very easy to communicate with and also works very well with teachers academic plans .
Thank you Gayle for making Lilly's junior year a giant success!
Gayle assisted me in understanding graphs and coordinate systems. Mostly, we touched on finding the center of a circle and it’s radius.
Gayle really helped my child to realize she really has the knowledge and is on the right path of analysis. She is excellent at explaining the concepts and encourages her students to ask questions
Gayle has been great helping my son prepare for his last few tests. I really appreciate her friendly and respectful approach. She has been very responsive and reliable. My son also seemed very comfortable with her from their first meeting.
We went over my exam study guide dealing with solving quadratic equations, solving using interval notation, word problems, graphing quadratic functions, circles, polynomial functions, rations functions, exponential functions and simplifying the difference quotient. She was very helpful and made it very easy to understand. Very professional and personable, will definitely use her again!!
My son really enjoyed his first session with Gayle. He left saying that she explained everything so well. After this first session, he feels a lot more confident about his ability to understand and tackle the math exercises from his homework. He is looking forward to working with Gayle.
Gayle has been working with my daughter for Algebra I. Every time they finish a session my daughter is confident and ready for her quiz/test. This confidence is reflected in her grades that have steadily increased.
Gayle is an excellent teacher. She has been tutoring my daughters for 3 months now and the improvements in their grades are simply amazing. My girls just could not understand the material in the way it was being taught my their current math teacher. That was resulting in poor grades and even lower self esteem. They have gone from B- students to A/A- students now because of Gayle's knowledge of the subject and her knowledge of how to teach a child. My girls look forward to Gayle every week. If you need a math tutor do look beyond Gayle. Her help to my girls is priceless.
Gayle is really good at helping you understand the material. I have found myself getting everything she teaches me by the time she leaves. she helps me with anything I need and she understands everything I need to be taught.
Gayle is a very knowledgeable, patient, flexible and compassionate tutor. She is always willing to try and meet my daughters educational needs with her honors pre-calculus class. This is not an easy subject and we are thrilled to have found her!!!
This was my daughters first session. She is usually very shy. Gayle made her feel very comfortable. She already helped her understand a problem she was having.
My daughter has an upcoming test in Geometry Honors and was confused by some of the concepts. Gayle reviewed these with her and showed her some strategies to approach the problems. She is much more confident and feels ready for an upcoming test she was worried about. Thank you!
After just two lessons with Miss Gayle our daughter came home with a 90% on her latest Pre-Calculus Quiz!
She has taken much of the stress out of the course for our daughter, who comes home from her lessons smiling.
Thank you Miss Gayle! We highly recommend you!
My son was dead set against a tutor. Gayle has changed his mind. He finds her very helpful. She explains his questions and helps him to fully understand the work. My son is recovering from a concussion and his memory has been greatly effected. Gayle has been wonderful to work with in review his Trig/PreCalc work
Gayle seems very competent and my daughter finds her helpful. We hope to continue a mutually beneficial relationship.
Ms Gayle is helping my 7th grader master Algebra I. She is reliable, kind and patient. My daughter is able to understand her classwork and turn in complete homework This is reflected in higher overall quiz and test grades. Thank you Ms Gayle!
I am extremely dumb when it comes to math. Gayle was so helpful and even more patient because I truly asked the same question a bunch of times and she explained it until I got it. She walked me through my project and encouraged me to contact her if I needed more help. Of course I will use her again. I will likely use her for the rest of my semester.
Working with Gayle has been a pleasure. Rachel is passing math now with a solid B ! First time in two years!
Ms. Gayle taught me how to complete my homework, which required solving equations, proportions, and properties. I learned how to solve these problems at ease and was able to identify my mistakes and parts I was hesitant at. In addition, we went over a test review worksheet to prepare for my upcoming test. Overall, it was a great and productive lesson that lasted for an hour.
Gayle's teaching abilities are exceptional. She has a quality of teaching that enables the student to grasp the material on their level.
Thanks Gayle !
Gayle has really helped my son improve his test scores in Algebra 2. She is very patient and really boosted his confidence in his ability to understand and complete his homework and tests.
Gayle is teaching my daughter Math skills for SAT prep. She is a very understanding tutor and wants to help her students learn the right concept and wants to make it easy for them at end. We've had only 2 sessions with Gayle but very happy that she is my daughters' tutor.
Gayle helped my son study for an exam and he got a 94!! He wasn't doing too well before.
I sat in the other room, her Patience and assurance that he was asking intelligent questions was great. She has a very calm approach and it was just what Brendan Needed!!!!
Gayle is very patient, well prepared and knowledgeable. My teenage daughter enjoys working with her. She gives me important feedback so that I may best guide my daughter. She's also very professional.
Gayle's dedication to her students is a top priority! She goes above and beyond to ensure her students are successful!
She was amazing. My daughter felt very comfortable with her and asked her many questions and at the end of the session was confident with the knowledge and had a better understanding of the work. She is patient and kind and very personable and clearly loves what she does. I always think that when a student respects a teacher because that teacher clearly wants them to understand the work they are teaching, success happens.
Ms. Gayle provided patient tutoring that eased my teenager and made her feel more confident! She was able to help my daughter with all of her questions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught and/or tutored high school math courses for almost 20 years. Algebra 1 is one of my favorites because it introduces the student to the idea of relationships between objects. Algebra 1 is the foundation for all subsequent math courses, so confidence in Algebra 1 concepts is vital. I have the experience to help your child gain understanding and confidence in this course.
Algebra 2 serves two purposes: 1) it pulls together the skills from Algebra 1 and Geometry and 2) introduces extensions of those earlier concepts.
From my many years of teaching and tutoring Algebra 2, I understand the challenges students can face in this course. At the same time, I try to use real-world scenarios to clarify where Algebra 2 concepts would be involved.
Let me help you gain confidence and skill in this math course!
Geometry is a core subject in the math curriculum. It focuses on the physical properties of objects and their links to algebra concepts. Higher math curricula often rely on knowledge of geometry.
I've taught geometry many times and like to emphasize its use in everyday life as well as its links to other math subjects.
Algebra is the foundation for math, science, and statistics investigations. Pre-Algebra introduces the foundational concepts used in all higher level math courses. I'm well versed in the Algebra concepts and can help your child understand them using clear language and real-life examples.
Pre-Calculus deepens your understanding of and skills with various types of equations and graphs that are a lead-in to Calculus.
I have taught Pre-Calculus and Calculus for years and understand how the features of these courses expand your array of equation types that you use in your chosen field.
Over the last eight years, I've helped many students prepare for the SAT so that their scores improved considerably. Students become comfortable with content, the types of questions, and how to budget their time. I can help your student, too!
