I am an experienced tutor in mathematics and the mathematical sciences.

I have been a private tutor since 2013, and have privately tutored various middle school, high school and college math courses, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus I, II & III, Introductory Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, and ACT Math & SAT Math. In addition, I also have experience tutoring high school Physics, high school & college level Computer Programming, and high school through graduate level Economics.

While in college and after graduating I was employed as an assistant instructor by a private tutoring company for over half a year, and have since worked at a number of math enrichment centers and after school programs in Mercer and Middlesex counties. I have taught classes of 4-16 students in all levels of high school, middle school, and elementary school mathematics, as well as SAT math. In addition to this, I also have run a pre-k math/English class and a class on Lego Robotics.

As an undergraduate I studied Mathematics, with focuses in Quantitative Economics and Operations Research. I am experienced with Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Math Logic, and have taken up to Graduate Level Probability courses. My PhD is economics, and I am well-versed in Statistics, Economics, and basic Computer Science. If you are in Central NJ and looking for an experienced tutor with flexible hours, feel free to contact me.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have been tutoring mathematics for standardized testing since 2013. The ACTs, like most standardized tests, while meant to measure mathematical ability, are often just a measure of how well you take tests. Luckily, we can help improve your math skills and go over the necessary strategies to take a test like the ACTs.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

Computer science is really just math with a bit less numbers and a bit more creativity. In addition to having taken a number of advanced computer science courses at university, I have helped numerous students pass their AP comp sci exams and work on the college computer science work. With more and more of our world becoming digital, its important to have a good foundation in computer science, and together we can be sure to meet your computer science needs.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

At Rutgers University I took courses in differential equations and partial differential equations. I achieved A's in both classes, and have assisted students with more complex mathematics in the past as well.
Econometrics

Econometrics

As an undergraduate I took multiple classes in regression analysis, time series modeling, and other econometric techniques. I currently work full time as an economist where statistics and econometrics are frequently used. While econometrics and other economic forecasting techniques can be difficult, I find it is best taught by having a firm grounding in statistics and eventually working up to more advanced theories.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is often the first time a student is introduced to formal logic and proof-based arguments, making it one of the most unique mathematics courses in a student's career. But with clear explanations and simplified examples, I can help make the new concepts introduced in geometry easily understood.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is really just the study of the same math learned in high school, but with more confusing names. It is easy to relate some of the more advanced vector and matrix concepts to simple algebraic equations. I find when teaching students linear algebra, having a high school textbook nearby is a big benefit. Linear algebra may seem like a lot of hard concepts, but it's really just easy concepts with hard names.
Logic

Logic

I have taken courses on formal logic and mathematical logic as an undergraduate, and have tutored predicate calculus and formal logic as well. Some of my methods include helping define logic in more concrete terms for students who may have trouble with abstract concepts, as well as illustrating numerous examples of the laws of logic, types of reasoning, and inductive proofs to help students get a feel for the material. By working from the ground up, and building a students reasoning first through simple logical statements, logical connectives, and quantifiers, I am able to help my students understand difficult concepts by building on simpler ones. When I work with a student they are able to build up their own logical intuition and formalize it easily.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is that important subject that bridges the gap between algebra and higher level mathematics. It can often be challenging for students due to the variety of new topics introduced, but the concepts are not as hard as they might seem at first glance! Whether it's trigonometric functions, conic sections, complex numbers, or matrix algebra, I can help get you up to speed in pre-calculus and get you prepared for higher level mathematics.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been tutoring mathematics for standardized testing since 2013. Though standardized testing vary in difficulty and scope, their key feature is that standardized tests don't necessarily measure mathematical aptitude, but instead measure how well you take tests. No matter what levels of mathematics you are currently at, we can make sure your test-taking abilities for math-based standardized tests are top notch.
Visual Basic

Visual Basic

In addition to studying computer science extensively while in university, I currently work with VBA on a daily basis. VBA has simpler syntax than most computer languages, and the concepts used in coding are directly applicable to most workplaces, making it a great language to learn. Whether you want to use Excel more efficiently or want to due more back-end programming work, I can help get you up to speed and meet your specific coding needs.

Connected well with my son

My son is finicky about tutors. He and Alan really connected. Finding the right rotor is about both content knowledge and interpersonal rapport. Alan has both. On the way home my son told me Alan teaches him more than his math teacher.

Alan C

Alan has been a great help to my kids, and they have improved with only a few sessions. Alan is great at explaining and relaying information to them which they can understand and study further.

Very Knowledgeable

Took the time to review all my work and point out areas of improvement. Clarified more in 30 minutes than my class itself did. Very knowledgeable and good teacher.

Super helpful and knowledgeable tutor

He helped me understand what the question asked when it was worded weirdly. He went through each problem and laid down the basic/foundation of the concept in order to solve the problem. Highly recommend and would go back to him for future help.

Excellent SAT coach

Alan is the sort of coach a young man who is athletic, smart and busy wants to work with. Our high school senior has limited time for SAT prep due to intense academic and athletic schedule, yet he's eager to work with Alan, who is young, calm, extremely capable and, as our son said, "One of the smartest people I ever met!" If you're looking for someone who can really relate to your student and help them achieve their goals, look no further than Alan. He is reliable, he is able and he is a wonderful coach!

Great SAT math tutor!

Alan finds your areas of weakness and works with you to ensure that you master them. Alan is very knowledgeable and patient and makes sure you actually understand the concept and not just going through the motions of solving a problem.

Great Precalculus tutor!

Alan was punctual, polite and professional in his demeanor. He reviewed material that had been confusing to my daughter in a clear and effective manner so that she was able to understand it. Highly recommend.
