This is Reinaldo G. Please let me know your needs. I pursued an associate's degree in electronics right after serving 6 years in the military. I realized that I had forgotten a lot after only a few years spent at work, even though I loved math in high school. Others around me also felt overwhelmed in college and were not willing to reach out for help. However, I wanted to succeed. That is why I started as a night tutor for the Learning Center at my local community college. That was over 30 years ago and I was still a student at engineering school. It was great to sit with people to figure out the math late into the night so we could both sharpen our skills.
My bachelor's degree studies in computer engineering plus my previous work experience in military electronics got me to understand the many ways to explain math problems. I get to know so many people who never truly understood how to approach the subject. I never want to just feed answers (a few students have walked out on me when I refused to do that). Although some students may feel truly desperate, it woud not help them learn the material. The best approach for me is to trace back to where the difficulties began for the student. I love tutoring because it is just two people working together. Several times people have approached me on their third time taking a math course they needed to pass, otherwise they would be expelled from college. After taking the time with them, they began to discover what they were missing. They could now learn so much on their own (and they could help their own classmates!).
Now I have a master’s degree in Mathematics Education. It has helped me become a high school teacher and a professor. Nevertheless, I still feel most comfortable taking the time sitting down with students as a tutor. Previous students come to find me many years after graduation to thank me and tell me they never would have expected to handle math at the university level.
The last few summers I got to take statistics, precalculus, and calculus over again so
