I have assisted hundreds of graduates and pre-graduates gain internship experience and full-time or part-time work in their field of study. I also provide interviewing tips, mock interview practice, cover letter and thank you note writing, resume writing, job search methods, networking skills and social media profiles.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have been a College Career Counselor for six years helping students determine their career and educational plans for success in their chosen field. Discussing further education at schools of choice is always a topic of the planning sessions with students and their parents. Reviewing the college applications, answering questions, assisting with essays, gathering supplemental materials to send with the applications, checking a school's criteria, curriculum and course offerings are also part of the process. This is a very big commitment that requires a lot of preparation for sound and informed decision making. I enjoy being involved in that process and find it is key to successful career planning since the ultimate goal of education is usually career related for most students. It is hard to reach a goal without a plan in place no matter what that goal may be.
COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT

I am professionally trained and have several years of experience in HSPT/COOP test preparation. I specialize in verbal and quantitative math skills including reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. I use comprehensive study guides and select online resources that include practice drills, practice tests, study tips, organizational skills, and testing strategies to empower students to do their best on the exam. I am also HSPT, ISEE and SSAT trained and experienced; for students seeking private school admission. Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have six years of experience tutoring and teaching grades K-6 and 7-12. I have worked with each type of math introduced to students from year to year and made sure to remain up to date with the curriculum. I use several different approaches to help students learn and retain math concepts, since math has to be learned and cannot be memorized. I assist students with a one-on-one individualized approach to help with effective study skills, test taking strategies and homework assistance to lead to their success. I show students "how" and "why" with basic and core math concepts so they can build on these skills and not have gaps in their level of understanding. I help students conquer math anxiety and show them that they really can understand math.
English

English

I specialize in tutoring all types of English, Language Arts, writing and grammar at the K-6, 7-12, and collegiate levels. I cover reading comprehension, writing, grammar rules, spelling, vocabulary, word pronunciation, Latin and Greek word roots, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, punctuation and sentence and paragraph structure. This also includes literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays, college and preparatory school applications and standardized test preparation.
Grammar

Grammar

I specialize in tutoring all types of Language Arts and grammar at the K-6, 7-12, and collegiate levels. I cover grammar rules, spelling, vocabulary, Latin and Greek word roots, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. This can also include writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays. I teach grammar rules with an everyday approach to help with a full understanding instead of just memorization. For example, lots of students have trouble with rules that involve the usage of commas, semicolons, apostrophes with regard to possession, issues with writing tense, correct usage of pronouns, issues with homophones, incorrect word usage in context called "malapropisms", compound words, transitional phrases for writing, sentence fragments, redundancy and worn out words. Just to name a few!
Handwriting

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting techniques with many young students and students with disabilities as a full-time district tutor for five years. One particular type is called "Handwriting Without Tears" and it can really make a difference in a student's educational abilities. I have seen many students gain handwriting improvement and confidence through using this easy to learn technique. It is also easy to teach and fun.
ISEE

ISEE

I am professionally trained and experienced in standardized test preparation including reading comprehension, essay writing, and quantitative skills in verbal and math. I am ISEE and SSAT trained and have focused much of my tutoring in those areas of expertise. I use the Princeton Review "Cracking the SSAT/ISEE" study guide as a workbook resource to help prepare students for the exam. It is known to be the most comprehensive ISEE and SSAT study guide available. I have also worked as a district tutor for five years teaching in grades K-12 with all of their subjects. I love teaching and tutoring grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, literature, math, history and science.
Literature

Literature

I specialize in teaching and tutoring all types of Literature and Language Arts at the college and K-12 levels. This includes writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays. Additionally, I cover grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. I use a very positive, individualized, self-confidence building approach towards reading, writing and study skills. I also try to kindle enjoyment in reading, which reinforces the learning of multiple aspects of the writing process. I try to help each student realize their own potential. I believe in the power of learning and I seek to instill that in others.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I have used Microsoft Windows for over ten years in a professional setting in my daily work. I find it to be a great tool with many helpful features and its ease of use saves time. I also find the help feature to be of particular value since you can look up anything and learn as much as you want to about it. I have used that to teach myself any advanced items that I was curious about. I like that the help feature can be very serendipitous. Windows also has an intuitive user-friendly style with universal compatibility with Windows users everywhere. I have shared tips and shortcuts and explained its features to many colleagues and students who were just being exposed to it for the first time. It is very easy to share with others. I find that I have inadvertently become the "go-to" person for questions in each college that I have worked at. It really allows the user to set up features that make sense to them with their daily needs; while letting you skip the things that are not of value for your particular usage. I enjoy working with others to share my Windows knowledge in a one-on-one tutoring setting at both the collegiate and K-12 levels.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have over 5 years of Language Arts tutoring experience at the college and K-12 levels. This encompasses proofreading and editing for all types of English needs including, content, flow, format, ALA, MLA, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. These skills can be utilized for reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, school projects, essays and college and prep school admissions applications.
PSAT

PSAT

Since I am professionally trained and experienced in SAT and ACT tutoring for standardized test taking, I have the experience necessary to prepare students for their PSAT as well. I have specialized in standardized test preparation for over five years. With each student, I focus on building vocabulary, practicing and understanding grammar rules, reading comprehension exercises, various math skill areas, critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning, standardized test taking strategies, organizational tips, and study skills. My goal is to empower each student to perform to the best of their abilities, on any of the standardized tests, for positive results with their college decision process. Preparing for these tests is of utmost importance to reduce test anxiety and to show students the basis of standardized test taking. Standardized test taking skills differ greatly from basic test methods that have been taught over a child's years of schooling. Both students and their parents benefit from understanding that the test taker does have some control over their test results, as long as they take the opportunity to prepare with study guides and tutoring expertise. Without this training many students take standardized tests not knowing that they can prepare, therefore, they end up retaking these costly tests, many times, hoping to better their results through familiarity, instead of focused and results-oriented preparation.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have given interactive public speaking lectures in classes for four years at the collegiate level. The lectures were two to three classes per term and 6 times per year. Each class had up to 60 students. Topics lectured on were interviewing, creating your career network, navigating social media, resume writing, creating your on-line business image, selling your skills on an interview and creating your 30 second elevator speech to best be able to present yourself and your skills.
Reading

Reading

Prior to my current full-time, private tutoring I worked as a Certified School District tutor for over five years assisting students in grades K-12. I specialize in teaching and tutoring Language Arts with a focus on all reading and writing skills; including reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, paragraph and sentence structure, vocabulary, sight words, and spelling. This area of study may also include writing assignments, special projects, and various types of essay writing. I find that reading comprehension can be difficult for students to grasp what they are reading, for so many reasons. Therefore, with individualized attention, I can hone in on each student's particular strengths and challenges and use a very positive, self-confidence building approach towards their improvement and overall success. I also try to instill enjoyment in reading, which reinforces the learning of multiple writing and communication skills. I focus on helping students realize their individual potential; since self-confidence is such a key component to an individual's learning abilities.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am professionally trained and experienced in every aspect of SAT test preparation including all of the SAT math subjects. Specifically all of the quantitative math skills tested including pre-algebra, algebra and geometry. I have been tutoring SAT preparation using practice drills and practice tests along with supplemental math materials covering percentages, word problems, fractions, decimals, exponents, square roots, order of operations, positive and negative numbers, prime numbers, integers, factors, prime factors, multiples, absolute value, polynomials, slopes, intercepts, area, perimeter, volume, circumference, pythagorean theorem, pythagorean triples, factorials, imaginary numbers, etc. I use the Princeton Review "Cracking the SAT" study guide as a comprehensive workbook resource for interactive learning with students.

Social Studies

Social Studies

I worked in the Nashua School District as a special needs tutor and full-time paraprofessional for five years. I have tutored and taught students ages K-12 in social studies, history, geography, sociology, psychology, the health sciences and much, much more. I also work at the college level and enjoy working with young adults who need individualized attention to build their confidence in their own abilities. I see the potential in each student and when you believe in them, they believe in themselves.
Spelling

Spelling

I am a full fledged spelling and vocabulary word nerd! I truly enjoy teaching students how to spell in a non-tedious and productive manner. I use tried and true methods to show students how to spell by syllable, by learning the meaning of word roots or stems, prefixes and suffixes, patterns of words by their Latin or Greek origins and many more methods. These methods teach students to learn to "decode" words and not to focus on memorization only. They also learn words in groupings rather than trying to memorize lists of words with no correlation to each other. These methods make all the difference with retention and really build confidence in a student's abilities. In turn it helps to improve verbal and written communication skills. It also results in doing schoolwork more effectively, efficiently and accurately.
SSAT

SSAT

I am professionally trained and experienced in standardized test preparation, reading comprehension, essay writing, and quantitative skills in verbal and math. I am SSAT and ISEE trained and have focused much of my tutoring in the past five years in that area of expertise. I use the Princeton Review "Cracking the SSAT/ISEE" study guide as a resource to prepare children and their parents for the exam as it is known to be the most comprehensive SSAT and ISEE study guide available. I have also worked as a district tutor for five years teaching in grades K-12 with all of their subjects. I love teaching and tutoring grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, math, history and science.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have been tutoring grades K-12 for over five years including study skills, test taking strategies and various organizational tips and skills to retain studied information. I have assisted children with homework after school and during summers to also help retain learned information since it accumulates from grade to grade. I have been professionally trained and have worked as a substitute teacher, a paraprofessional and a special needs paraprofessional.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I assist students in increasing their vocabulary skills covering several different areas of need including: vocabulary lists targeted for SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE and HSPT standardized tests. I also work with age-specific "dolce" sight word Iists that supplement children's reading skills. I truly enjoy teaching students vocabulary in a non-tedious and productive manner. I use tried and true methods to show students how to learn words by breaking them down by syllable, by learning the meaning of word roots or stems, by recognizing prefixes and suffixes, seeing patterns of words by their Latin or Greek origins and many more methods. These methods teach students to learn to "decode" words and not to focus on memorization only. Through this work, students also learn words in groupings rather than trying to memorize lists of words with no correlation to each other. I also focus on using a Thesaurus as well as a dictionary to properly learn vocabulary usage, pronunciation, parts of speech, origin, synonyms and varied word meanings per sentence context. These methods make all the difference with retention and really build confidence in a student's abilities. In turn this basis helps improve verbal and written communication skills, which can also result in doing schoolwork more effectively, efficiently and accurately.
Writing

Writing

I specialize in teaching and tutoring all types of writing, English grammar and Language Arts at the college and K-12 levels. This includes writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, school projects, essays and college and prep school admissions applications. Additionally, I cover grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. I use a very positive, individualized, self-confidence building approach towards writing, reading and study skills to promote growth and retention. I also try to kindle enjoyment in reading, which reinforces the learning of multiple aspects of the writing process. I try to help each student realize their own potential and to trust their "inner writing voice" and thoughts as a place to start from in improving their writing skills overall.

Amazing Tutor – Highly Recommend!

Karen has been an absolute game-changer for my son's digital SAT prep! She specializes in both the digital SAT and ACT, and her expertise truly shows. Since working with her, my son’s scores have improved dramatically — we’ve seen such a significant increase that we’re still amazed! What sets Karen apart is her ability to break down complex concepts in a way that truly clicks with him. Math and reading used to feel overwhelming, but with her clear, structured, and supportive teaching style, he now feels confident and prepared. She’s incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging — exactly what we were looking for in a tutor. It has been such a joy working with Karen. She’s not only helped boost his test scores but also his self-esteem and motivation. If you're looking for someone who really knows how to reach students and bring out their best, Karen is the one. We couldn’t be more grateful!

Amazingly knowledgable math tutor & test strategist

My son unexpectedly needed to take the SSAT (long story) and we all felt unprepared. Karen was very responsive and we had a session booked in no time. So glad we did. I never knew how much we didn't know about this sort of test taking. Karen taught him not only math but how to think differently about mastering the test and taking advantage of the many skills he already had. She had so many cool, interesting ways to think about the typical math problems differently while also maximizing efficient use of time. He walked out of his first session a few inches taller than when he started and his confidence grew from there. He not only improved his math but grew confident in his abilities to do well in the test. We even saw a few smiles along the way (he hates math, but perhaps a little less now). Thank you Karen. We'll be in touch for more tutoring as he plans for high school.

Knowledgeable and patient

Reading comprehension is difficult to teach, but Karen’s in depth knowledge and strategies for the ISEE is invaluable. Most importantly I relied on my child to make the assessment and she wanted to continue with Karen over other tutors.

Excellent teacher !

Karen is easy to work with. She led my 6th grader into self reflection while writing and structuring his personal essay. There is no right or wrong , just a matter of improving previous versions which is helpful!
