My name is Kathy. We moved here from a small town in New York eight years ago to Hillsborough. Then, last year we moved from Hillsborough to Raleigh. When my husband and I first moved to NC we had no jobs. I filled in for a maternity leave position teaching at a local elementary school. I have a BA in English and an MS in Education. In New York, getting a teaching job is very competitive. I was at an interview for a fourth grade position and asked how many people had applied for the position and they said about 1400! I taught at a private elementary school right after I earned my BA. Then I went into educational publishing. However, I had a passion for teaching and really missed it. So, I went back to school and earned my MS in Education. However, as I said teaching jobs were very hard to find in New York so I worked at Child Development Center with 18 two-year-olds. We used High Reach Curriculum. While I enjoyed my time at the Center I really missed Elementary school students. Therefore, I went back to educational publishing since it was so difficult to find a job at the Elementary level in NY. Bottom line is Education has always been my passion and I am now in a position where I can hopefully get back to it. I believe in Bloom's taxonomy... bringing students up to higher levels of thinking (not just memorization for example but having them be able to apply what they've learned). I also believe in the teaching of different learning styles. For example, one student may be an auditory learner while another student a visual learner. In addition, I believe in hands-on learning and making learning meaningful and relevant to the student. There is nothing more rewarding to teach someone something and also making it a fun and enjoyable experience. My name is Kathy. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
