Common Core

Common Core

I have extensive experience with Common Core, having taught, coached teachers, and implemented high-quality Math and ELA curricula in multiple schools and districts. I specialize in helping students build a conceptual understanding of math through problem-solving, number sense, and real-world applications, as well as strengthening literacy skills through text analysis, evidence-based writing, and critical thinking. I have led professional development sessions for educators on best practices for Common Core instruction and have worked closely with parents to help them understand their child’s learning, including strategies like model drawing in math, close reading techniques, and writing with textual evidence. My expertise ensures that students, teachers, and families feel confident in Common Core’s approach to deeper learning.

Homeschool

Homeschool

I have hands-on experience with homeschooling, both as a parent and educator. I currently homeschool my toddlers, who—despite being under 3—are already recognizing letter sounds, identifying numbers, counting, and building a large vocabulary. In addition to teaching my own children, I have worked remotely with homeschooled students, designing engaging, personalized lessons and collaborating with parents to support their child’s academic growth. My approach focuses on early literacy, foundational math, and hands-on learning, ensuring that young learners develop a strong educational foundation in a fun and meaningful way.
Phonics

Phonics

I’ve taught numerous kids how to read, guiding them from beginner readers to advanced comprehension. For early readers, I focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding strategies to help them recognize letter-sound relationships and blend words. As they progress, I emphasize fluency, sight word recognition, and vocabulary development to build confidence and reading speed. For more advanced readers, I teach comprehension strategies such as summarizing, making inferences, comparing and contrasting, and analyzing themes to deepen their understanding. Throughout the process, I incorporate critical thinking, writing connections, and a love for storytelling to ensure students become strong, lifelong readers.

We are highly satisfied with the lessons we have with her.

I started lessons with her to support my sixth-grade child in ELA, and the experience has been outstanding. She demonstrates a high level of professionalism and skill, addressing areas where my child needed improvement with patience and expertise. What stands out most is that my son genuinely enjoys her lessons and eagerly looks forward to each session. I am thoroughly impressed and would highly recommend her to anyone seeking quality instruction.

Wonderful Tutor!

Jem has been wonderful for my daughter. She works through everything with her and is very patient. She has learnt more with Jem in 4 sessions than she has been able to learn a full semester in school. My daughter looks forward to meeting with Jem for the weekly hour session. I am very thankful to have found Jem.

Patient and Caring

Jem is very patient and is working to learn what works for my child’s specific needs. He is new to online tutoring and has an issue staying focused. Jem has found a way to keep his attention by using small breaks. She has a rewards system that involves drawing, which he loves. Happy to see him willing to participate.

Excellent in Phonics

Jem H is an outstanding phonics instructor. My grandson struggles with phonics and word endings, and Jem H has been incredibly patient and observant in tailoring her teaching approach to his needs. She provides constructive, effective instruction and ensures a supportive learning environment. Additionally, she records each tutoring session, allowing parents to review and observe her teaching methods firsthand. I wholeheartedly give Jem H a well-deserved 5-star rating.
