It always bothered me when students got "turned off" to math at an early age due to frustration when the material was explained too quickly or not presented in a way that reached every student. Since math is a basic skill that is needed to manage life, I try to ease anxiety and give confidence to students, so they believe that they CAN do math!

When I first meet with a student, I try to assess strong and weak understanding of concepts. I present material as necessary based on the student's needs, and then we work through problems until the student understands and remembers the steps to perform with minimal hesitation. I have created teaching materials to help us focus on the particular areas of difficulty.

My goal is that the student will be able to think on his/her own and think logically when attempting to solve a problem. Life is full of problems to solve, and being able to think logically and remember a series of steps is essential when in school, on the job, cooking, doing a home project, planning a party, etc.; I try to make students understand this so they stop questioning "why" they need to learn the material in the first place!

Sometimes life gets in the way of tutoring appointments, so I ask for at least a 2-hour notice of cancellation, and we can reschedule. We can meet online or at a local library, bookstore, or coffee shop, wherever the student feels relaxed and comfortable and can focus.

I have tutored all levels of math through Calculus 1 professionally since 2008, but I have been helping people with math for most of my life. Additionally, I teach Pre-Algebra and Beginning Algebra (to students ages 18 - 63!) at the local community college.

I enjoy helping students realize that they do not need to fear math!

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring and teaching algebra for over 12 years, and I am an adjunct math professor at the local community college. I create math resources to help students understand, practice, and remember the concepts ~ students enjoy math once they learn how to do it! Some students have grasped the logic behind math so well that after a year they no longer need tutoring, and they succeed in more advanced math courses.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Although I have been helping students with math for most of my life, I have been tutoring and teaching algebra professionally since 2008. I am also an adjunct math professor at the local community college. I create math resources to help students learn, practice, and remember the concepts ~ students enjoy math once they learn how to do it! Building confidence in Algebra 2 concepts helps students proceed and succeed in more advanced math courses.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I love math, and I have been helping students with math since I was in elementary school. After tutoring students on a regular basis over the course of a school year, they understand the logic behind math and are able to solve problems on their own, which is a great confidence booster! Some of my students have been so successful with a year of tutoring that they are able to proceed through future math courses with only occasional tutoring to focus on complex concepts.
Precalculus

Precalculus

My love of math has driven me to help students with math for most of my life, and now I have been teaching and tutoring professionally for over 12 years. Many students enjoy math once they learn how to do it, and I enjoy seeing "the light come on"! Even students who like math need clarification of some concepts, and I'm happy to help them succeed.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can be very difficult to comprehend, so I break down and explain the concepts in a couple of different ways to help students learn and remember them. Minimizing math anxiety helps with the stress of completing homework, quizzes, and tests. My goal is to help students see topics, like trigonometric identities, seem like puzzles to solve – and have fun with it!

Very Good!

My daughter is reviewing Algebra I and Geometry before Algebra II starts in the fall. She felt super comfortable with Dawn and said she was 'very good'. That's saying a lot coming from a 15 year old!
