I love helping people, and one of the best ways I know to do that is to share my knowledge. Over the last seven years, I have tutored privately and with a tutoring company; I was also a teaching assistant during graduate school. Some of my accomplishments during my years of tutoring have included helping a student pass a math class that he had previously failed three times, editing a friend’s personal statement for the graduate school she is now attending, and helping a student overcome test anxiety when writing an essay. I have experience tutoring online as well as in person.

When I tutor, I like to relate the lesson to the student when possible. For example, if a student likes music, I would use lyrics from a song to teach context clues, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. I also aim to diversify techniques to cater to different learning styles (e.g. visual, auditory, tactile).

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored students in math—mainly algebra 1—since 2008. I helped a student with ADD pass a college algebra course that he had previously failed three times. With my help, he went on to pass that class and the next math class he needed for his Associate’s degree. I have taught high school students as well; for example, I taught an SAT Prep class which included SAT Math instruction.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutored elementary students while working for Tutor.com—an online tutoring company—and TRY Tutoring & Learning Academy (TTLA) in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. While with Tutor.com, I provided online homework help and writing coaching to students in all grades. At TTLA, I taught two third-grade students in English Language Arts with an emphasis on grammar, reading comprehension, and writing, and then I continued tutoring one of the students in math. I also tutor my seven-year-old niece and four-year-old nephew, providing homework help and going over concepts learned in school (e.g. sight words, math, spelling, and the alphabet).
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I view math as a strategy game, and that is how I get my students to think of it, too. Most of the students that I have tutored in math over the past 9 years have come to me because they've failed classes or have math anxiety. Using charts, games, and props, I get them to feel comfortable with the material.
English

English

I have tutored third through tenth grade students in language arts, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. I instructed students on ways to better their organization and study skills and kept parents abreast of their children’s progress. I also proofread and provided feedback on college research papers for a graduate student.
Reading

Reading

When assisting students with reading, I determine their knowledge of phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension (e.g. ability to summarize, identify the author's argument and supporting points, etc.). I tailor my approach based on the particular area a student is struggling in.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I earned a 3.9/4 GPA in graduate school, a 3.79/4 in undergrad (majoring in English and minoring in Spanish and African Studies), and a 4.1/4 in high school. My academic success was mainly due to good study habits and time management skills. I have been teaching and tutoring for 6 years (since graduate school), and when I tutor I show students how to have a positive mindset, minimal distractions, good note-taking skills, and memory tricks. These, I believe, are all important for developing good study habits.
Writing

Writing

I have a Master's degree in English Literature and have been helping students with writing since graduate school. I have years of experience coaching students on writing thesis statements, brainstorming ideas, building a written argument, and organizing paragraphs. I have also proofread essays, research papers, personal statements, and dissertations for students from middle school through graduate school.

Patient & Engaging

Shania was awesome. She was very engaging which helped my son feel comfortable. She used short lessons to figure out what he knows and built his confidence from there.

Math review

My daughter is in the 5th grade, but we're prepping for 6th grade math - preAlgebra. Shaina is helping her review concepts and increase her understanding. Shaina makes it fun and challenging. A great tutor.

Patient, kind, and very knowledgeable

Shaina was great with my daughter. She helped to rebuild her confidence in Pre-Algebra by showing her things her college professor was too indifferent to do. Wow, Shaina is a true blessing!

Very Patient

1/2/2015 Shaina was on time and my daughter seems to have been comfortable with her. She said that she showed her an easier way to reach the answer. She took time to listen to my daughter, and she never made her feel like she could not learn. 1/4/2015 My daughter was feeling good about the lesson. She said she had a better understanding of the unit ratio, and that Shaina had show her a better way of reaching her answer. Thank you, and I would like to schedule another lesson.
