After a brief stint learning piano at age 8, Riley M. began playing guitar at age 15. He was immersed in the rock legends such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen before diving deeply into the world of jazz and classical guitar. Enrolling in the University of Kansas’ music program after playing guitar for only 2 1/2 years. He developed his jazz skills performing in small and large ensembles. He also worked with Doctoral flute student, Matthew Allison as his accompaniment for his DMA recitals. Moving to Nashville in 2008, Riley shifted gears to study music business. Currently, he performs with Kansas City’s preeminent gypsy jazz group. He also fronts several bands with some of Kansas City’s premier musicians.

Riley’s top strength is ear training and music theory. While he reads music, he mostly picks out songs by ear with near perfect accuracy. This translates to his guitar playing, piano, and ability to transcribe music without digital tools to help.

Riley loves working with students, and always strives to be a voice of encouragement to his students. He has found that lesson time is equal parts instruction and therapy for students. Always lending a kind ear, he works diligently to make a student feel validated as an individual. His lesson plans are custom designed to each student’s particular needs.
