About Rachel

My name is Rachel, and I'm a graduate from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor's of Science in Journalism. Some of my passions include taking care of and helping kids, helping people in general, writing and reading.

I have some experience working with children in a educational setting. I volunteered at the Upper Room In Kansas City, Mo., which offers out-of-school education to inner city children. While volunteering there, I helped children in 1st and 2nd grade with their reading. One technique that I used a lot was helping the kids sound out words when they didn't know them, as opposed to just telling them the words. I think this helps them to learn and retain the information better. I also volunteered at an elementary school in Lawrence, Kan. My duties here were helping kids one-on-one with activities and homework in a variety of different subjects. Most recently, I worked at Children's Learning Center, a daycare, in Lawrence, Kan. I mostly took care of, played with and instructed children between the ages of 0 and 4. From all of these experiences, I learned how to interact with a variety of different children, which is beneficial as a tutor as well. No two children are alike; and when helping a child in any setting, it is important to know and cater to his or her personality and learning style. You can count on me to do that!

Besides my experiences teaching and taking care of children, I have previous experiences that have helped me strengthen my writing skills. I have done some freelance writing for Americare USA, been an intern at Natural Home & Garden magazine and Carondelet Health in the marketing department. These jobs, plus my four years of journalism school at KU, helped me gain excellent writing and communication skills. I spent a lot of time being taught by my professors and bosses, and I also spent time teaching others in my class through presentations and helping co-workers who didn't understand their work.

I don't have generic tutoring methods that I would use for everyone that I tutor. Some people are more hands-on learners, while others retain more information through listening and observation. As I mentioned earlier, in terms of reading, I usually find it most beneficial to help children sound out words when they are stuck instead of just telling them the word right away. With writing, it is usually best if students write out their assignments and then ask me specific questions about vocabulary, punctuation, etc. during the tutoring session. That way, we can focus on broader concepts that prove constantly difficult for the student. Those are just some examples of my tutoring methods, but, again, it's a case-by-case basis.

My passions for helping others, plus my school and employment history, make me an ideal tutor. I am a motivated person and always put 100 percent into my work. You can count on me to be focused on you or your child during the tutoring sessions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I grew up in a Catholic church and went to both Catholic grade school and high school. I now identify myself as nondenominational Christian. I have attended Bible Studies in the past. I currently volunteer at EastLake KIDS!, which is kids church during the regular service. I work with and teach the third through fifth graders about Jesus referencing their lives and the Bible.

English

English has always been my favorite subject. While at KU, I took some English classes, including Composition, Critical Reading and Writing, and Nonfiction Writing I. In these classes, my other English classes and my journalism classes, I learned a variety of skills that make me a valuable tutor. I learned everything from proper grammar and punctuation to how to analyze stories and novels to editing papers.
