From the time I was young, I knew I would be a teacher as I loved learning and helping others. I have been teaching and tutoring for nearly 20 years. I have taught in suburban and urban public and private schools, served as a resource teacher in a university (tutoring all subjects), and worked for several ACT/SAT test prep companies before becoming a full-time mother and part-time teacher/tutor.
Over the years, I have worked with students from many different cultural backgrounds, students for whom English was a second language, students with learning and behavioral challenges, and honors/AP students. I have helped many students improve their ACT/SAT scores, especially in reading and English. I was a Cambridge ACT program teacher for several years, and I have awesome test prep materials that are not available in stores. It is the best program of all that I have taught (I have worked for multiple tutoring companies).
For ACT and SAT tutoring, I usually work with students for 8-12 weeks, doing one 1.5 - 2 hour session per week. I can also help younger students prepare ahead of time by helping them improve their vocabulary, reading skills and writing skills so the test will be less daunting when the time comes to take it.
I am an experienced subject tutor as well. Over the years, I have created curriculum for and taught numerous English classes, including freshman English, world literature, American literature, and creative writing. I studied British literature at the University of New Hampshire. I have taken numerous languages including Spanish, French, and Old English. I am comfortable teaching any subject through grade nine (including math and science), and I can teach all humanities subjects through high school and freshman year of college.
As for my personality, I am friendly with a good sense of humor. When I taught high school, students always thought of me as a compassionate and creative teacher. Parents with students with learning disabilities frequently requested me as their child's teacher.
I currently tutor grades 6-college in test preparation, study skills, English, and all humanities subjects. I can also do math tutoring up to and including geometry.
Keep in mind that WyzAnt will ask for payment info up front, and this is partly to ensure the tutor's safety. But we can speak on the phone to find out if I would be a good fit for both of us, or we can meet for a coffee to see what goals you have for yourself or your child. My daughter was failing her AP Lit class up until a few weeks ago, primarily due to struggles with the essay writing process. She comes up with good ideas for a thesis but has difficulty getting her thoughts organized. Carey was instrumental in helping my daughter work through the entire essay process and address the teacher's rough draft comments. My daughter received an A on the first essay she turned in after working with Carey for a few sessions. Very grateful to have found such a patient and caring tutor.
Carey was able to quickly analyze where my son needed the most help. Then she suggested a helpful and realistic outline for sessions and timing. In turn, he felt comfortable with her strategy and personality...not always an easy task when working with a 17-year-old : ) An excellent tutor!
Carey really helped me get my essay in good shape for my application! She did a great job and I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught a prep class for ACT English and grammar workshops for many years. In the past few years, I have tutored approximately 25 students in taking the ACT English section.
In addition to teaching a prep class for ACT Reading, I have also tutored for major tutoring companies. I have access to materials like Cambridge's program, which is better than anything out there! I teach reading strategies to help students read the sections faster and choose correct answers. I use strategies that help them predict what the questions and answers will be before they even get to the questions.
I have experience tutoring pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and algebra 2. My main area is English/reading, but I am able to help with math as well.
I have taught American Studies (English/social studies combined) and have a minor in social sciences.
I was trained to tutor all subjects at Huntington Learning Center. I currently teach math through grade 9 at Fusion Academy in Oak Brook.
I have taught and tutored English since 1997 (15 years). I have also worked an editor and writing in the corporate world, created online marketing materials, and written a novel. I am currently writing a young adult fiction novel!
As an English teacher, professional proofreader, and writer, I have developed a quick ability to find errors in others' writing. I am also an excellent teacher of writing and grammar.
I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English literature. In addition to classic literature, I have experience teaching modern fiction and non-fiction (middle grade through adult). I can help younger students learn to enjoy reading. I have also taught honors English (both world and American literature). I can help with writing analytical papers as well.
Taught reading comprehension within English classes, to ESL students and as a tutor.
I have worked one-on-one with students with disabilities learn how to study, use graphic organizers, keep track of assignments and take notes. I served as a resource teacher early in my career, which gave me the opportunity to tutor many subjects and help students excel in school.
I am a certified English teacher, which includes writing.
