About Carey

I would love to help your son or daughter score higher on the ACT or SAT! While I am a certified English teacher, I have many years' experience teaching these tests and am familiar with the new format of the SAT. Whether your middle grade student is trying to win an award or your high school student needs a better score for admission or scholarships, I can help. I can look over current scores your student has and help make a plan - sometimes it is better to focus on getting higher scores in the areas of strength and sometimes a few hours of tutoring in a weak area can greatly increase one's score.

I have worked with several major test prep companies, and I can honestly say most of them spend too much time (and too much of your money) on lessons.

Currently, I do test prep on Sundays at the Hinsdale Library. Sessions are for 1.5 hours (I have found one hour to be too short and two hours to be too long). I typically work with high school students for about 6-8 sessions. Most students will not see a vast improvement after the 6-8 sessions unless they are younger students who are practicing test prep and reading skills over time.

If you are interested in long-term (i.e., school year tutoring), please contact me and we can discuss rates and schedule availability.

I am an experienced subject tutor as well. Over the years, I have created curriculum for and taught numerous English classes, including freshman English, world literature, American literature, and creative writing. I studied British literature at the University of New Hampshire. I have taken numerous languages including Spanish, French, and Old English. I am comfortable teaching any subject through grade nine (including math and science), and I can teach all humanities subjects through high school and freshman year of college. I have helped many students go from LA to ELA, improve their writing and vocabulary and feel more confident in their writing. I have also helped students improve their writing for college essays and for A.P. English classes.

As for my personality, I am friendly with a good sense of humor. When I taught high school, students always thought of me as a compassionate and creative teacher. Parents with students with learning disabilities frequently requested me as their child's teacher.

Keep in mind that Wyzant will ask for payment info up front, and this is partly to ensure the tutor's safety. But we can speak on the phone to find out if I would be a good fit for both of us, or we can meet for a coffee to see what goals you have for yourself or your child.

CANCELATION POLICY: Please cancel appointments at least 48 hours before scheduled time. Last minute cancellations require a fee equal to one hour of tutoring. If we can make up the time during THAT week, I will not assess a fee. Continued cancellations may result in loss of time slot. My apologies for this, but I often have a wait list and a sitter scheduled so I can tutor!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught a prep class for ACT English and grammar workshops for many years. In the past few years, I have tutored approximately 25 students in taking the ACT English section.

ACT Reading

In addition to teaching a prep class for ACT Reading, I have also tutored for major tutoring companies. I have access to materials like Cambridge's program, which is better than anything out there! I teach reading strategies to help students read the sections faster and choose correct answers. I use strategies that help them predict what the questions and answers will be before they even get to the questions.

American History

I have taught American Studies (English/social studies combined) and have a minor in social sciences.

English

I have taught and tutored English since 1997 (15 years). I have also worked an editor and writing in the corporate world, created online marketing materials, and written a novel. I am currently writing a young adult fiction novel!

Grammar

As an English teacher, professional proofreader, and writer, I have developed a quick ability to find errors in others' writing. I am also an excellent teacher of writing and grammar.

Literature

I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English literature. In addition to classic literature, I have experience teaching modern fiction and non-fiction (middle grade through adult). I can help younger students learn to enjoy reading. I have also taught honors English (both world and American literature). I can help with writing analytical papers as well.

Reading

Taught reading comprehension within English classes, to ESL students and as a tutor.

Study Skills

I have worked one-on-one with students with disabilities learn how to study, use graphic organizers, keep track of assignments and take notes. I served as a resource teacher early in my career, which gave me the opportunity to tutor many subjects and help students excel in school.

Writing

I am a certified English teacher, which includes writing.

Patient tutor who cares

My daughter was failing her AP Lit class up until a few weeks ago, primarily due to struggles with the essay writing process. She comes up with good ideas for a thesis but has difficulty getting her thoughts organized. Carey was instrumental in helping my daughter work through the entire essay process and address the teacher's rough draft comments. My daughter received an A on the first essay sh
