Hello, and thank you for checking out my profile!

Are you in agony during math class? Does it take too long to complete your math homework? Does it seem like, no matter what you do, you can't be successful in your math class? If so, let me help!

My goal as a math tutor is for you to both gain confidence and acquire an appreciation for math. The objective of each tutoring session is to convert the struggle into a strength all the while creating a positive experience. My approach is to pinpoint what areas of you struggle with, then build a step-by-step process to remedy this area. I primarily try to keep the pencil in your hand so you gain the hands-on experience that is necessary to properly learn and absorb math.

I currently teach Calculus and Statistics at College of Lake County. I have previously taught Mathematics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I am looking to tutor a few students through Wyzant that would like my help. I hold a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Akron and my Bachelor of Science degree is in Math Education. Not only do I understand the math concepts backward and forward, but I also know through my education and 17+ years of teaching and tutoring experience that there are best practices for teaching math. Whether you are interested in just 1 session or are looking for a long-term math tutor, I would be thrilled to help you reach your goals!

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have led a Summer course in ACT Math to several already advanced students. They all achieved a 5-8 point improvement on their ACT Math score. For standardized exams, I find the most improvement comes from much experience with sample tests, and creating the same test-like setting. Also, completing and grading sample exams helps me to identify where you most often make errors. Once identified, we can remedy the errors. Whether you need a certain score to get into your dream school or you just want to see if you can improve your previous score, reach out to me! I want to help you in whatever way I can.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In order to perform well in any higher level math, you must grasp the concepts of algebra. For algebra students, I tend to preach "practice makes perfect", because it does! For virtually any Algebra problem, there is a step by step way of reaching the outcome. If you are having Algebra woes, just shoot me an email! Algebra is my favorite!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In order to perform well in any higher level math, you must grasp the concepts of algebra. For algebra students, I tend to preach "practice makes perfect", because it does! For virtually any Algebra problem, there is a step by step way of reaching the outcome. If you are having Algebra woes, just shoot me an email! Algebra is my favorite!
Calculus

Calculus

If derivatives and integrals are causing you heartache, just let me know! I am here to help. Usually I can identify that the issue lies in algebra and pre-calculus concepts. Once identified, we will find the best way to remediate through practice. My main goal will be to make you an independent learner by filling in any gaps in foundational concepts and finding the best ways for you to learn new concepts. As a high school student, I earned a 5 on the AP Calculus Exam, so I know what it takes. If this is your goal, I can help you achieve it.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I completed an ODE course during June 2014. It was a very rigorous five week course, but I received the highest score in the class. I would be happy to share my notes and study strategies for any student looking for assistance in Ordinary Differential Equations! I look forward to hearing from you.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have taught many of the topics found in discrete math courses in the college setting. Whether it's Set Theory or Probability that has got you bogged down, please feel free to reach out with the confidence that I will be able to help!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I taught 15 separate Fundamentals of Math courses at Brown Mackie College. This course material closely aligned with material covered in Elementary Math. I have also tutored several elementary and middle school students. So whatever age you are, it would be my pleasure to assist you with your elementary math needs!
Finite Math

Finite Math

I have successfully taught a finite mathematics where we delved into concepts such as matrix algebra, logic, set theory, probability, and statistics. I understand this is not the traditional math route and know the tools needed to be successful in these courses. Reach out if you need help!
Geometry

Geometry

During my undergraduate career, I took a course called Fundamental Concepts of Geometry which focused on the best teaching methods for high school students in regard to geometry. The class stressed using manipulatives to help students grasp the underlying concepts. As a geometry tutor, I bring much of what I learned to the table...literally! Geometry is all about visualizing, and what better to help you visualize something then have an actual object in front of you! If you need assistance in your geometry class, just send me an email and let me know the topics beforehand so I can bring the appropriate materials.
Logic

Logic

Trying to sort through your p's and q's? I have taught formal logic in several courses (Discrete Math, Finite Math, Discrete Structures, General Education Math, etc.) and I would be more than obliged to help!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Perfecting the concepts of Prealgebra is vitally important to being able to move forward with your math studies. Students tend to get anxious and somewhat confused when variables are introduced to math. I do my best to explain the meaning of a variable in detail, so they don't get too flustered. From there I give step by step instruction on each concept, and then provide numerous examples, until the student feels comfortable. Prealgebra issues? Just let me know and we will tackle it together.
Precalculus

Precalculus

This course can be tricky, because it depends highly on your understanding of Algebra 2 material. I will introduce step by step methods, as well as try to show precalculus students how the math they are learning can be applied to the real world. If you are struggling, let me help!
Probability

Probability

I have taught several advanced students the fundamentals of probability. I find it very helpful to explore the hands on aspect of this subject by use of dice and playing cards. I am happy to help!
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have helped several students prepare for the math portion of the SAT exam. All students saw an improvement in their scores after my assistance. Whether you need a certain score to get into your dream school or you just want to see if you can improve your previous score, reach out to me! I want to help you in whatever way I can.
Statistics

Statistics

I have taught both a science based statistics course and a business statistics course. I especially like involving Excel and/or graphing calculators in the analysis. I can also tell you the WHY of each concept.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can be a tricky subject, because it requires quite a bit of memorization. But I try to help students focus on how you can use one formula to derive another. I also try to point out patterns in the formulas as to make it easier to remember. I have helped many students in understanding the unit circle specifically by using symmetry to make it less intimidating. If you'd like some extra help with trig, feel free to reach out to me.

A great tutor on so many levels!!!

Shannon has been working with my son for a few weeks now and his progress in understanding the Calculus topics and being so very well prepared for his tests has been amazing! Shannon knows the material and can teach it so that it is a understood and absorbed. Also, Shannon has been so flexible with our schedules including staying later than originally scheduled on some days. Shannon has been so very helpful from our initial interaction with her even before we signed her up!

Excellent tutor!

My kid was struggling in trigonometry. We tried another tutor that just made it more confusing and left my kid feeling worse. Shannon was a dream come true! She was patient and explained everything in an easy to understand manner. My kid raved about her!

Shannon Is a Great Tuto

She helped me solve basic calculus problems I need for business school, and did so in a way that gave me the tools I need to continue to work on my own. Made the material easily accessible and approachable. Highly recommend.

BEST MATH TUTOR

We have sampled different tutors on Wyzant and Shannon is a STANDOUT! She knows the material and can deliver it succinctly in easily digestible bites that students understand. My kids came away empowered, prepared, and wanting to do MORE MATH (!) with her. Need I say more...

excellent math tutor

We had our first tutoring session with Shannon this week and it went very well. She does a great job explaining math and breaking down the concepts so my 5th grader understands it. She is very kind and patient which made him feel very comfortable working with her. I highly recommend her!
