Hi! My name is Sherri and I am a Certified Phonics and Reading Tutor with seven years of experience as a tutor, Reading Interventionist, Substitute Teacher and Teacher Assistant. I have worked one on one tutoring elementary students in both local counties within the vicinity of my home. I have also worked with small groups of students teaching them Phonics and Reading.

Currently, I am a Certified Phonics Tutor working with an online company. I use curriculum provided by the company that I work for, but I also create lesson plans and strive to pinpoint problem areas so that students thrive in and out of their classroom.

I am honored to help each student achieve success and improve his language, vocabulary, Phonics and Reading skills. Most sessions last one hour and I recommend that I meet with students more than once per week, if possible, to reinforce learning. I can tutor online or meet in your home or in a public establishment.

As a Reading Interventionist, I tutored five small groups of students in reading, vocabulary, phonics, and grammar using the method developed by Dr. Beverly Tiner.

Handwriting

As a part of the curriculum required for my degree in Elementary Education, I was required to take a Zaner Bloser handwriting course that included printing and cursive handwriting. Students were required to take this course as a part of teaching elementary students. I had to submit handwriting for analyzation, critique and grading.
Phonics,

Phonics

Phonics is the grouping of letters, syllables, and word patterns and decoding of words. Linguistic phonics involves understanding of word patterns such as cat, mat, rat and bat. Synthetic phonics involves the decoding of words involving individual letters and groups of letters in order to understand word structure and recognize language. Embedded phonics involves phonetics that are found within a literature's text. I took classes in teaching reading, which included using phonics to teach and improve reading skills. Courses included the use of "Foundations of Reading and Literacy & Teaching Reading in the Elementary Grades" by Canter and Associates. This book includes chapters about phonemic awareness and teaching to promote understanding of phonetic blends in order to enhance reading skills.

Learning themes, settings, ideas, main ideas, characters, rising and falling action, morals and other different elements of a story. Currently, I tutor students who did not score well in English on standardized testing. These students are tutored in reading and comprehension along with vocabulary and grammar. I use worksheets along with flashcards, diagrams, drills, reading assignments and other instructional resources to improve their reading, vocabulary and grammar skills. Most students are elementary aged, however, I work with students of all ages. English has always been my forte and I also enjoy assisting students who are writing research papers and thesis papers.
