About Sherri

Hi! My name is Sherri G. and I am a senior at the University of West Florida pursuing a BA degree in Elementary Education. I will graduate in early 2016, and then I will begin teaching grades K-6th. Recently, I completed 30 hours of Practicum hours in a 5th grade and a 1st grade classrrom. I assisted the teachers with instruction, reading and Math. I will begin Student Teaching soon.

For the past three years, I tutored students as an SES tutor for Escambia County. I tutored these students in Reading and Language. I believe that all children have the right to learn, however, I also believe that learning should be fun besides being educational. I implement a one on one approach to learning with the use of workbooks, videos and other educational learning materials to make learning fresh and exciting for young students. Students who do not understand a particular subject will be encouraged to research the subject to learn more information. Language students are taught strategies to improve their reading and comprehension skills through introduction of new vocabulary and use of sight words to enhance the learning experience. I review worksheets with students so that the student and I can discuss any mistakes that were made on the worksheet and correct them. Then, the students are encouraged to review and study the information for further assessments. I also use Venn Diagrams and Charts to allow the students to brainstorm already known knowledge while discovering new knowledge and information about a subject.

I have completed and passed all of my certifications except for one which I will take during the summer.

I charge an hourly rate, however, I give discounts for 2 or more lessons per week. I do not tutor in my home, but I will meet students at various locations such as libraries, their home or book stores.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by the state of Florida in Elementary Education for grades K-6th. My certificate can be verified with state of Florida.

English

Currently, I tutor students who did not score well in English on standardized testing. These students are tutored in reading and comprehension along with vocabulary and grammar. I use worksheets along with flashcards, diagrams, drills, reading assignments and other instructional resources to improve their reading, vocabulary and grammar skills. Most students are elementary aged, however, I work with students of all ages. English has always been my forte and I also enjoy assisting students who are writing research papers and thesis papers.

Phonics

Phonics is the grouping of letters, syllables, and word patterns and decoding of words. Linguistic phonics involves understanding of word patterns such as cat, mat, rat and bat. Synthetic phonics involves the decoding of words involving individual letters and groups of letters in order to understand word structure and recognize language. Embedded phonics involves phonetics that are found within a literature's text.

I took classes in teaching reading, which included using phonics to teach and improve reading skills. Courses included the use of "Foundations of Reading and Literacy & Teaching Reading in the Elementary Grades" by Canter and Associates. This book includes chapters about phonemic awareness and teaching to promote understanding of phonetic blends in order to enhance reading skills.

Praxis

I have passed the Elementary Education K-6 FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exam) and the General Knowledge FTCE exam except for the Math portion. These exams are very comparable to the Praxis exam that is administered in other states. I am certified in Elementary Education K-6 with the Department of Education.

Reading

Reading and Comprehension practice using workbooks, flash cards, sight words, Venn diagrams, and vocabulary. Students identify difficult words and practice learning their definitions so that they can make a connection between a particular word and that word as it is used within the text of the story. Practice of grammar as it is related to reading and its usage within a sentence. Learning themes, settings, ideas, main ideas, characters, rising and falling action, morals and other different elements of a story. Identifying antagonist and protagonist and other characters within a story. Comprehending ideas when reading a story about a particular subject or person.
