Hello!
My name is Emily W. and I am a 29 year old college graduate with a physics degree from Boston College. I moved from Massachusetts to central Florida in 2017 to push myself and try something new. My first formal teaching experience began summer 2017, as I taught Applied Physics at the Exploration School at Yale University, a boarding school for international high school students. Since moving to Florida, I have tutored all math subjects from middle school math through college multivariable calculus, and sciences including high school and college physics, chemistry, and orgo. Other topics I have tutored include GED prep, SAT prep (subject and general), ACT prep, and saxophone.

Tutoring is an exciting occupation because every opportunity is totally new, even when teaching the same subject. It is a reward and a challenge to come up with new ways to explain the same topics because every student learns differently. The most rewarding part of any tutoring session is the "Aha" moment where the student finally understands a difficult topic. A teacher in a classroom must teach topics broadly to try to appeal to as many students as possible, but this approach instead leaves most students partially understanding instead of fully understanding. The job of a tutor is to bridge that gap and create full understanding through personalized lessons while making personal connections to the student.

As a tutor, I would expect students to encounter challenging material, to be perplexed, and to be amazed when they realize how much they can achieve on their own.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My experience with Algebra I currently includes tutoring multiple students in the course, including FLVS, pre-algebra, traditional track, and honors. Algebra I is one of the most important high school math courses because it is most applicable to real world situations such as calculating finances, economic growth, and business profit versus expenses. This is the stage of high school math where the student must transfer from concrete learning to conceptual application, a transition pivotal to future success. Other applications of algebra I include SAT/ACT math prep, GED math prep, liberal arts math, and college algebra.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

My current experience tutoring Algebra II includes both high school and college level courses. Examples include FLVS algebra II, traditional and honors algebra II, SAT/ACT math prep, and college algebra, and liberal arts math.
Chemistry

Chemistry

High school level chemistry, AP chemistry, and college level chemistry 1 and 2
GED

GED

My current experience in tutoring GED prep includes preparing 2 students for their GED exams. One student was of high school age and one was a working adult wanting to finish school. The most important aspects of GED test prep are being prepared for a timed test and being able to understand the types of questions that will be asked, including knowledge of how to approach these types of problems.
Geometry

Geometry

My current experience in geometry includes teaching FLVS, traditional, and honors courses. Further applications of geometry include pre-calculus, trigonometry, physics/engineering, SAT/ACT math, and GED math, which use fundamentals of geometry in their problem-solving.
Physics

Physics

My experience in teaching physics began with a summer teaching position for the Exploration School at Yale University in the summer 2017. After 7 years, physics has become one of my most popular subjects, including high school physics at the traditional, honors, and AP level, as well as college physics 1 and 2. At Boston College I earned an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Physics including taking the electives High Energy Astrophysics, Special Relativity, and Plasma Physics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

For the last 7 years, I have worked with several student through their pre-calculus courses, including FLVS, honors, and the most recent AP precalculus course. Course knowledge includes calculator computations and graphing required for the course, as well as the written mathematical computations.

Met with Emily for tutoring for my chemistry exam at ucf and she was very patient and helped me grasp the concepts. Also explained it in a way I understand and had notes ready for me. Thanks again Emily!
