In fifth grade, I taught math and science for 5 years. During this time, I developed a love for math. At the end of my fifth year in fifth, I studied for and passed my middle school math certification and started looking for middle school math teaching jobs. I found that spot and have been there ever since.
I am currently teaching honors algebra, which is a 9th grade course, to 7th and 8th graders at my school. My first year teaching middle school, I taught 7th and 8th graders. These were all lower level students. During this time, I also started tutoring online. During COVID, I taught online for a full year and enjoyed it, so I figured I would try it one on one. I thoroughly enjoy online tutoring. I like the one on one and being able to get to know the students that I tutor on a deeper level. I am able to learn how they learn and the strategies that work best for them.
I have had the same group of students for the past two years. Last year, I taught them pre-algebra. 92% of my students passed with a level 3 or higher. This year, I had the same students in honors algebra. The school district also required that 7th graders who got the highest level on their of year testing in 6th grade also be placed in algebra. Any 7th graders, who not in pre-algebra, who received a 3 or higher, were also placed in my honor's algebra classes. This was a challenge for the students and myself. This year 81% of my students passed their EOC exam.
I enjoy teaching math to a classroom full of students or online with one student. It's my passion.
