With a Bachelor's Degree from Berklee College of Music, I have been in many positions in the music industry. I worked as a voice teacher in a music school in Singapore, a concert producer for the Stop Asian Hate movement, a record producer for Japanese artists, a headlining performer, a background singer and so much more.

What I teach my students in music is the work ethic and attitude needed to succeed as a musician. Whether you want to sing or write songs, you have to DO THE WORK! Music is a language, and its vocabulary is developed through your own practice. Therefore, my teaching method is centered around building your musical vocabulary so you can express the sound from the bottom of your heart. It is a PRACTICE! Students who study with me will leave with a thick portfolio full of work and recordings they can use for any sort of applications.

In all my classrooms, I emphasize ear training. Music is meant to be heard and listened. Even though Beethoven went deaf, because he had such a strong foundation of sounds and notes, he can hear the music in his head. My students all walk away with the ability to hear music in their minds. In MUSIC THEORY, students will play the lesson materials on an instrument to internalize the feeling and sensation of harmony. Not only will they know the terminologies, they will be able to identify chords by ear when I play them on the piano. In VOICE LESSONS, I encourage students to observe their voice under different stimuli. They walk away with the ability to balance their head and chest voice. I also ask them to listen to their favorite singers and listen to the different nuance inflections they do whether that is a growl, a crescendo, or a riff and replicate those inflections. In MUSIC PRODUCTION, I require students to listen to other tracks and transcribe and remake the tracks. Just like how a baby learns to talk by listening to adults talk and emulate them, I will teach you how to develop your own musical language.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

After finishing Berklee College of Music's intensive ear training program, I amassed a wealth of knowledge on how to develop a musicians ear to be able to identify anything from melodies, rhythm to extensive harmony such as secondary dominants, tension, inversion and complex meters. Students walk away with the ability to recall sounds in their heads which can help performers, composers, audio engineer to better understand the nuance of sounds.

Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

I help students develop solid concept of pitch and sounds in their brain by practicing the different modes in western music to be more familiar with chromaticism. Students also walk away with confidence of different rhythms ranging from commonly seen pop rhythms all the way to esoteric poly rhythms. All of my knowledge comes from my education from Berklee College of Music.
Songwriting,

Songwriting

My teaching is separated into two concentrations: lyric writing and music composition. In lyrics writing, I train my students to do sensory writing, which is to write completely using sensory description. This challenged students to feel and transition that feeling into words. All good songs touch us because they make us feel something. Students walk away with the ability to write lyrics in the form of verse-refrain and verse-chorus-bridge. In music composition, students will learn music theory and be familiar with popular chords progression. Students will expand their tonal vocabulary including modulation and modality. Further study of form including the verse, chorus, transitional bridge and the primary bridge will help students develop their narrative.
Voice (Music),

Voice (Music)

Specialize in vocal functional training, I have taught students how to balance and mix their chest and head voice to increase range, agility, volume and emotional delivery through voice exercises I adopted from the Bel Canto and SLS schools. All voice issues stem from the singer's struggle to balance the registers along the musical scale. By having the skill to balance the two registers, singers will find tremendous amount of freedom and color in their voice.

Works well with my learning style!

I really appreciate his teaching and adaptation to my learning style. It’s a progressive journey but I appreciate Jimmy for helping me achieve one of my dreams in becoming a better musician!

Aubrey, 8 lessons with Jimmy

Knowledgeable, hard-working music production teacher

Jimmy is teaching me the fundamentals of music theory and music production. Coming up with a song concept, creating the melodies, learning how to use Logic, sound design, how to make dope drums and bass lines, mixing, etc. Jimmy is very knowledgeable and goes above and beyond to make sure that we thoroughly understand the material.

Very Productive lessons

I've been working with Jimmy for a solid handful of months now on songwriting and now logic. I have already learned a lot from Jimmy and I'm excited to see where we go from here. We've covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Jimmy is patient and very knowledgable.

Versatile and helpful teacher

Jimmy has also been extremely helpful with my college application process. He started with a series of consultation recommending me different colleges that have programs which fit me. He also tries to understand what I’m really passionate about and what my strengths are so I could find colleges that can possibly give me scholarship. He was also very helpful in developing my singing, Songwriting and music theory to a college level. He also offered career advise and showed me different paths. I highly recommend jimmy for anybody who wants to begin studying music seriously. He challenged me and grew me into an artist.

Highly recommend! Knowledgeable and friendly tutor!

We discussed our goals before the lesson started and he asked questions in the lesson to make sure we are learning the materials that will help me reach my goals. Also, he is good at pushing me to finish tasks I feel like I might fail. He uses a friendly tone and insists that I can do it. I find this way is helping me to challenge myself to practice more. He is also good at managing lesson time. He makes sure that we cover all the things I want to learn and don’t go over time. All in all, I really appreciate Jimmy to adjust to my different learning goals and materials and his way of teaching. He also leaves homework and go over them next lesson so that I keep progressing to my goal! I highly recommend him as a music teacher!

Jimmy C

I have been taking voice for a while and Jimmy showed me some techniques I have never heard of but that make sense. I am excited to learn more from him. I believe having homework is a good idea, and I was never offered this by any other teacher. I can play piano so the recordings I make are spot on. I sincerely hope that we can make a good time.

Jennifer, 2 lessons with Jimmy

Knowledgeable and systematic with his lesson plans

Jimmy’s voice lessons are very well prepared and professional. He had lay down expectations at the very beginning of the course and at each lesson, as someone being out in the work force, this have been very helpful for me to know where I’m going with these lessons. He is also one that have definitely pushed me in conquering my fears of unfamiliarity through a very thought-out process, overall I’m looking forward to reach potential possibilities with his lessons!
