Hello! My name is Ethan and I'm a recent graduate from San Diego State University with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Business. I've been tutoring online and in person consistently since early 2020 and have loved every moment of it. Originally, I wanted to go to college to study biology or some other science, but the way my professors presented mathematics at my community college made me want to pursue the subject further. I have four years of experience tutoring college students at Sierra College both online and in person with topics ranging from basic algebra to differential equations.
No matter who you are, I believe you have the ability to succeed in whatever math level you're at. My ultimate goal as your tutor is to make learning math a smooth and fun experience that will strengthen your mathematical abilities and reasoning. The way I approach tutoring an individual student will vary based on strengths/weaknesses, your learning style, and/or specific needs and accommodations. Usually, I will focus on what weaknesses the student needs to strengthen. I'll then explain the topic to them using a metaphor or showing a very simplistic example. Once they feel like they have a partial understanding of the concept, I'll present them a few easy problems. As we work our way up towards harder problems, the student usually feels more confident in their abilities and able to take on tougher concepts. This model has produced results that have turned C students into A students and made them much less anxious about their math class.
I typically use the course material that is provided to me to create a foundation on how I should tutor a student. If a student needs additional practice, I can always provide extra problems for them.
