When I tutor English for middle and high school students, I emphasize composition and literary analysis, both skills I have honed through my bachelor's degree in Literature. SAT Reading and Writing are tests on which I've prepared students to score high.

For AP and IB Biology students, I break down concepts in easy-to-understand ways and assist with memorizing the large biological vocabulary required. My college classes in Biology, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Marine Biology/ Oceanography, taken at UCSD, give me a strong science background.

US History is the final course I tutor. Students at both the introductory and AP levels have worked with me on comprehension, memorization, and analysis of the history in their courses.

I believe a strong tutor-student relationship is essential to successful tutoring. It is important that students feel comfortable asking questions. I endeavor to earn the respect of my students so that I can push them to do their best work. Working together with families, I help my students to succeed.

Elementary (K-6th)

Since working for a tutoring company in Sacramento, I have tutored many young children in grade school subjects, most commonly reading and writing. For reading comprehension and fluency, I follow reading-level appropriate materials as determined by the students' current abilities and then, through repetition and focus on phonics concepts, we move forward to more difficult books. This approach has worked with first, second, and third graders very well. I let my students choose among books at their current level, which I select, and then I have them repeat the reading once or twice until they read it fluently. After a first reading we review the phonetic concepts that have been causing them difficulty. Some reading series even have word lists and phonetic practice built into the books. The parents of the children I have tutored have been very happy with my services and their childrens' progress. I look forward to working with you and your child to achieve greater success for them in school.
Spanish

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for more than a decade, taught Spanish 101 for two years at University of Wisconsin, Madison and have my Masters in Spanish. I also studied in Spain for a year and interpret for a legal non-profit. I have more than eight years of Spanish tutoring experience, and my students feel my lessons help them improve their language skills and gain confidence in Spanish.
Violin

Violin

I have played violin for 13 years, beginning when I was eleven. I have studied with several different private teachers and mastered various bowing and fingering techniques. In high school, I played with the Portland Symphony Youth Orchestra in Portland, ME, and I was accepted twice into the Maine All State Music Festival orchestra as a Second Violin. I have also tutored three students, seven, ten, and 14 year olds, in beginning violin.

Spanish 3 (High School)

Spanish 2 was stressful for our son so we offered to hire a tutor for him the following year for Spanish 3. He met with Andrea for 20 hours in 16 weeks over the duration of the class (18 weeks). Her knowledge of the subject is superior. She provided practice tests, study tools and helpful tips for our son to be successful. With her help he earned a B the first term and an A the second term. Andrea arrived on schedule and was able to accommodate requests for additional and/or extended sessions to prepare for tests including the midterm and final exams. Our son is now considering continuing on with Spanish 4 during his senior year on the condition that Andrea will be his tutor again.

Helped bring my sons grade up

Before my son started Spanish 3 tutoring with Andrea he was getting a D in the class with no hope of bringing it up and looking at his grade possibly dropping to an F. After nearly 3 months of tutoring with Andrea his grade went up to a C and we couldn't be happier. Andrea has been reliable, punctual and professional. My son felt comfortable with her and she was able to explain the material and give him Spanish exercises to improve his understanding and increase his test scores to pass the class.
