I have just completed my first year as an undergraduate student at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) pursuing Chemical Engineering. I have previously tutored in high school (volunteer, middle school math and high school chemistry), as well as served as a TA for APCSA (class setting) and a group leader for STEM summer camps (MiRcore — R and Biotechnology summer camps: volunteer, then paid position). In terms of qualifications, I have taken and excelled in all classes I am willing to help tutor subject material for (organic chemistry, math through Differential Equations, CS including python, java, and R, etc.), as well as actively applied most of it through research in computational biology through MiRcore or in my current role as an undergraduate researcher at Caltech in the Chemical Engineering department.
My approach to tutoring involves first pinpointing regions where help is needed through diagnostics or by request of the student, then focusing on engaging the student in these areas by demonstrating practice problems, and finally by allowing them to attempt problems with a similar approach. I prefer to provide similar examples, rather than helping directly with a problem, as this encourages a conceptual understanding that tends to be longer lasting and more applicable. In all cases, I tend to be empathetic and patient.
