Hi! My name is Alana and I am here to help your student feel more confident about their academic abilities! My specialties include K-12 English and Social Studies, ACT, and college/transfer/graduate school essays. I am patient, understanding, and dedicated to making sure that my students have adequate help and resources to perform their best and have the most confidence in themselves with whatever they are tackling.
I am a passionate and hard-working student. Through my 4.0 in high school and extracurriculars, I was able to receive an academic and leadership scholarship to UC Berkeley. At Berkeley, I graduated with honors and recognition, and completed an honors thesis in 2019. I was then accepted and completed over two years of Teach for America, in New Orleans, where I taught 5th and 11th grade Social Studies, 9-11 grade English, and ACT Prep. During my time in New Orleans, I received honors in my Teaching Certifications and created and implemented a curriculum for U.S. History, English I-III, and ACT English/Reading. The curriculums analyze most missed questions from practice tests to develop worksheets, homework that focused on the commonly missed questions. This strategy resulted in highest test scores in the district for all of the above subjects in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, and led to my 'Rookie Teacher of the Year" award in 2020
As a former High School teacher, I am well versed in the writing process and craftsmanship it takes to create a well-written, authentic personal statement. I support students to brainstorm, develop, and revise personal statements. It is important for me to help my students develop their own unique stories. My guidance has helped previous students receive acceptance to institutions such as Brown University, University of Chicago, Georgetown University, University of California School of Law, and Fordham University School of Law.
I am passionate about learning and devoted to ensuring that my students feel confident in their abilities! Please reach out!

Great lesson she made the story jump off the page.

She built a rapport with my grandson immediately. He became interested in the subject matter as she continued. We hope to continue weekly with her for the balance of the term.

Best tutor I’ve ever had - incredibly talented writer

Alana did a fantastic job helping me with my grad school application essays. Her help organizing my ideas, working on an outline, and writing up a draft was invaluable. Her patience and kindness helped me get through many stressful applications. She’s very thorough and thoughtful in her proofreading and I learned a lot by working with her. I can’t rate her highly enough.

Knowledgeable, Helpful, and Efficient

I came to Alana for help with my personal statement since my deadline was coming up soon. She was able to help me get my personal statement down from 2,000 words to 750 words, which was my word limit. She worked quickly and efficiently, going through my statement with me to cut things down, and getting my input as well on certain things, making sure that I liked the wording of the sentence before she continued. She helped me find and strengthen my voice in the statement and helped me get my story out on paper in a clear manner. I am very happy with how my personal statement turned out, and couldn't have done it without her. She’s very personable and patient as well. She went through each paragraph with me, and helped me rephrase sentences, eliminate repetitive words, and organize my thoughts better. Although my initial rough draft was very long, Alana helped me reduce the statement to my word limit, while still getting all of the main points that I wanted to make across. I highly recommend Alana for personal statements, essays, and guidance through your college applications.

Knowledgeable, Patient, and Understanding

Alana helped me edit my graduate school personal statement essay. I had an essay that I felt was missing something, but I wasn’t exactly sure what. She considered my goals for the essay, the due date, and was very patient with me. She was also understanding and would be open to working with me until I liked the wording of a sentence/paragraph. She helped me prioritize what should be in the essay and helped me rephrase my essay in a way that would get my points across most effectively. I am very happy with the end result!

Flexible and Hardworking Tutor!

I highly recommend Alana! We hired Alana right before finals for my son's AP Language class. The class final mocked the actual AP exam. Alana helped my son learn the vocabulary in an easy way, and apply it to the readings in the practice exams. Over the course of two months, this helped my son score 20% higher from his first practice exam to his second! We are continuing to use her to keep my son's grades up, help edit papers, and prepare him for the AP Language test in May.

Very Helpful and Accommodating Tutor!

My daughter has been using Alana since the beginning of the school year to help her with AP US History. My daughter has always struggled with her test taking and essay writing confidence. With Alana’s unique study techniques she has helped my daughter better understand APUSH and have more confidence in herself. My daughter has maintained an A in APUSH with constant help from Alana. We use her the weeks leading up to exam, as she provides mini study guides that help my daughter pace herself and not have to cram. Not using Alana would be a missed opportunity! We cannot wait to see how our daughter does on the APUSH exam in May.
