Hello! I'm Diego, and I have been serving as a tutor for 6+ years. My story in tutoring began in high school as a volunteer for under resourced students in my school district. I transitioned for a while to become a private tutor for one student in all classes, and then moved to volunteering once again for the Los Angeles Unified School District. While at UC Berkeley, I tutored on another online tutoring site for four years, meeting a wide variety of students in K-12. At Berkeley, I also tutored some undergraduate students in areas such as Real Analysis and Introductory Physics.
In my time tutoring I have noticed some fundamental problems in how we teach math. Math is the language the sciences speak to give us a better understanding of our world, so any student dreaming of becoming a scientist, doctor, or other career in STEM will need to use math. But math is taught quick, and without really checking understanding. It has always been my goal in tutoring to have students actually understand where the concepts and subjects are coming from, and how math connects to their other coursework. If students are studying a concept that requires square roots or solving for x, but they don't have that expertise, we will work to make up for what they could not learn. Some of my greatest memories are where are student can see a math equation and "read" what it is saying in English, and then because of that, the moment where it all becomes clear.
I have an Applied Mathematics degree from UC Berkeley with a concentration in Statistics. With this and my years of tutoring and trying different teaching methods out (since every student is unique in what they need), I think we will be a great fit!
