Hi, everyone! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile! My name is Erin and I was born and raised in Irvine, CA! I've attended some of the best schools in California and in the nation - Bonita Canyon Elementary, Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, University High School, UCLA, and UCI. My broad academic background includes a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from UCLA as well as a TEFL/TESL certificate from UCI to teach and tutor non-native English speakers.
I love kids and come from a large family- I have 3 sisters, 1 brother, and a Yorkie named Rocco who is very friendly and loves sleeping and treats! In my spare time I listen to all kinds of music and attending concerts. I love dancing, hiking, jogging, going to the beach, and practicing yoga. I have traveled to Japan, England, France, Italy, Mexico, and have been on many road trips throughout the US. I can write, read, and speak some Spanish and French.
I was a volunteer tutor for two years at Marina del Rey Middle School where I mentored 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and helped a "study buddy" with homework, test preparation, and study skills. We also played fun games indoors and outdoors, carved pumpkins for Halloween, and attended a UCLA Bruins Football game! My student went on to receive a special academic award from USC - she was invited to Catalina Island for snorkeling and science research - so exciting!
I have a passion for learning and for teaching others! I have extensive training from UCI where I was able to spend 200+ hours learning teaching methods for one-on-one and group classroom settings. I have been trained on test-taking and different types of examinations including, but not limited to, TOEFL, SAT, ACT, GRE, STAR, multi-subject, single-subject, written, and oral tests, and have created my own test preparation coursework and materials. I believe that each student is unique and I will use methods best suited for their individual needs. I love creating art projects or special assignments to delve deeper into what we are working on. I want to show my students that learning can be fun and they will adopt new habits for their future success. I try to encourage my students and push their boundaries within a comfortable zone, and I always give positive feedback and words of encouragement.
I have studied grammar, linguistics, and phonics. I am also a fan of using technology in the classroom to aid the learning experience through music, video shorts, and blogging to reach a wider audience. I like to use a variety of methods in the classroom to make learning fun, yet structured and purposeful. I use a variety of ice-breakers for the student and I to get to know each other, to build trust and confidence so the learning process can be most efficient. I truly value education and all that it has to offer!
I am planning to pursue a Masters Program in Communications and Linguistics and feel that tutoring is the best way to stay current with new teaching methods and school curriculum.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Bachelor's degree from UCLA in Anthropology with a focus on culture and linguistics. I participated in an Anthropological research class with a focus on Ethnography in a specific community, and also worked in the CELF lab transcribing video ethnography which focused on family life in Los Angeles. I took a broad range of classes and have a deep understanding of study skills and methods.
I attended UCLA where I received my degree in Anthropology with a focus on social and cultural studies. I also took 4 classes where I studied the archaeology of cities in India and present-day America. One class focused on the rise of cities in industrialized nations and we looked at material artifacts to discern how people evolved culturally. I enjoyed learning about this aspect of Anthropology and feel qualified to be able to tutor students this subject.
I am detail-oriented when it comes to preparing for tests or essays. I think that proper studying starts with note-taking in class, and relying on notes and readings to create study guides, flashcards, and memory exercises. I have tutored 6th-8th grade in multiple subjects and helped prepare them for standardized state exams and single-subject quizzes and tests.
