Hi! My name is Lindsey, and I am a 2nd year 4th grade Special Education teacher. I graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Special Education. Before Wyzant, I tutored 5th and 6th graders for 1.5 years. Since starting online, I have worked with students for over 930 hours ranging from 2nd-10th grade. Hi! My name is Lindsey, and I am a 2nd year 4th grade Special Education teacher. I graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Special Education. Before Wyzant, I tutored 5th and 6th graders for 1.5 years. Since starting online, I have worked with students for over 930 hours ranging from 2nd-10th grade. I love tutoring because I am able to build a relationship with students and encourage successful learning!

I have always enjoyed math, and I am experienced in teaching elementary, pre-algebra, and primary geometry concepts. I can break down word problems so they are easy to understand and find different approaches that are easiest for the students. I also make practice problems that are similar to problems they will encounter in homework or tests.

I can help students in various parts of reading and writing. I have experience in teaching decoding and the importance of phonics, as well as improving reading fluency and comprehension. I also teach applying these skills in other subjects to improve studying and recall. With writing, I provide guidelines on how to form answers using graphic organizers and sentence starters to form sentences and paragraphs.

Working with students in Algebra 1, I am excellent at taking a procedure and breaking it down into smaller and manageable steps for the student to be successful. Teaching math for 4 years through tutoring, I have also gained a lot of strategies and methods for ensuring that they are understanding the material.

Common Core

As a tutor, I have worked with students in grades 2-9 in Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho, and Illinois who all follow and use Common Core standards. Being IXL certified, I can easily pull up your state standards and turn them into lesson plans to help them understand the concept!

I have volunteered in a kindergarten classroom for 2 years, giving out assessments and overwatched activities for groups of 1-8. I have also tutored a group of 3-5 1st graders for 8 months. In the higher grades, I have tutored for 5th and 6th graders for 1 1/2. Through these experiences, I have been able to see how students learn in the classroom as an upcoming teacher.

I have the most experience with teaching various elementary math topics. I mainly focus on students in 2nd-6th grade and have taught basic algebra and geometry skills. I have worked with the math curriculum and state testing from Arizona, Texas, California, Virginia, Idaho, Illinois, and Georgia.

Working with younger students, prealgebra is what I focus on the most. I have used and taught from textbooks like California Common Core and GO Math, as well as following state standards from over 5 different states.

Reading

I have learned about reading sequences and explicit ways to teach students how to read and decode words. I took multiple college classes specifically on how to figure out what students know, and how to improve on their skills. Through student teaching, I have also gained experience on how to help students practice their reading fluency and comprehension.
STAAR

STAAR

I have multiple students who live in Texas and I have helped them prepare for the STAAR test for 2 years in a row. I am able to use information from a pre-test, determine what they need to know, and explicitly teach the skills they need for the test.

Writing

By giving sentence starters and graphic organizers, I can help students figure out what ideas they want to write about and the structure of specific assignments. I can also provide information on how to write and start essays given a prompt and increase their independent written expression.
