Hello, my name is Sara! I graduated from Florida State University with my Master's in oboe performance and hold a degree in music education from Central Michigan University as well. I have I taught private oboe, English horn, and reed making lessons for all ages and ability levels, tutored for music theory, history, and composition classes, and during the summer months I have worked as a counselor and teaching assistant for numerous music camps as well. I have had the privilege of teaching students of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds, and learned a lot through it!

Music can be a very challenging subject. I have experienced this first hand many times, and know how to turn my failures into successes, and how to help you, too! In my time studying music I have taken every available opportunity to learn from different teachers with different teaching styles -- this has helped me learn different ways of teaching, which allows me to adapt my teaching style to each student, their strengths, and their needs.

I teach my students to be independent musicians and creative thinkers, which are two of the most important qualities a musician can have. It is important to be able to practice and work effectively on your own, so I focus on teaching my students necessary skills to evaluate and improve outside of their lessons and tutoring sessions, essentially becoming their own teachers. This helps students improve more in less time, and helps them gain more confidence in their abilities along the way.

Tutoring is a team effort -- I ask that all my students come to the session with questions or concerns prepared, so we can hit the ground running and have a focused session from the beginning. I also ask my students to come with an open mind, willing to try new things!

I struggled with this subject in school, and am now equipped with a plethora of resources and strategies to help students improve and grow like I did.

Music Theory

Music Theory

I have been a music theory tutor for three years, tutoring many different college level music theory classes. I have also lead theory courses at summer music camps, run theory-centered lessons for beginning musicians, and been involved in theory projects with my professors in school. I have taken oboe lessons from a variety of professionals in addition to teaching my own studio of all ages and ability levels while completing my bachelors' and masters' degrees. My students are regularly principal chairs in their school ensembles, participate in youth orchestras, receive highly proficient rankings in regional and state competitions, and are accepted to their top choice music schools. I have also taught reed making lessons, and have started many students on their reed making journeys -- important for all oboists!

Amazing Improvement!

My daughter began her band camp this week with kids who have been playing together in the same class all school year. Despite being younger and not having been able to attend the classes, she has done very well! We can only credit my daughter’s improvement and new skills to Sara and her lessons! We can’t thank Sara enough!

Great instructor

We were hesitant about an online instructor at first, but Sara does a great job helping my daughter to identify different issues with her playing. My daughter enjoys her lessons with Sara.

Great instruction at all skill levels

I’m an experienced woodwind player but new to the oboe. She really helped me understand the fundamentals of the instrument that will be very beneficial as I continue to learn it. Thank you Sara!

excellent teacher

My daughter accomplished more in one hour than in weeks of self study. Sara immediately switched onto the student, identified problems and fixed them on the spot. She gave helpful tips for future play. Thank you

Inspiring and helpful

My daughter is a sophomore who just switched to play from clarinet to oboe 3 months ago. Sarah has made this transition much easier for her. Now her techniques and sound quality have improved a lot, and she’ll be able to play some solo part in the winter concert! Thanks a lot to Sarah! She’s a very inspiring and helpful oboe teacher.
