Serving in private and public schools, I have experience as a multiple subject classroom teacher, a reading specialist, K-8 district Reading Coach, Coordinator of Adult Literacy Programs and as a private, in-person and online tutor.

Currently, following the Wilson Reading System, an Orton-Gillingham research based program of instruction, I tutor a small number of students online to help them overcome mild to severe reading and spelling challenges. I also provide homework help in all elementary subjects, and particularly enjoy helping students improve their writing composition skills.

In my free time I love keeping in touch with my adult children, and hiking with my husband and standard poodle in the beautiful Sonoran Desert.

Dyslexia

As a graduate student at San Diego State University I completed fifth year of study consisting of a 30 unit Reading Specialist credential program and passed a comprehensive exam. I hold a Reading Certificate from the CA Department of Education. I have experience working with students that are dyslexic using research driven programs of study to address their challenges.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a teacher in Arizona and in California in public and private elementary schools. My classroom experience includes teaching first and second grade and I have experience instructing K-5th grade students as a pull-out reading teacher and as a substitute teacher. I led professional development while working as a Reading Coach for elementary school teachers. I am a California credentialed teacher.

I have many years of experience in providing one-to-one instruction in schools and in a library homework center to help students understand the math concepts required by today’s common core curriculum. English

English

As a native English speaker and former teacher in public and private schools in grades K-8, as well as in literacy development programs for adults, I am experienced in teaching English skills based on student needs. My areas of expertise include teaching basic to advanced vocabulary, simple grammar to complex sentence structures, word usage, and recognition of literary genres and devices. I can assist with learning English as a second language and develop English reading and writing focusing on comprehension and written response for all beginning to advanced students.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am a credentialed K-12 teacher with certificates authorizing instruction in Reading and academic instruction for English learners. I have taught English learners in elementary grades, first and second grade, and reading for all ages in small groups and one to one.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is a part of teaching children how to read and write. Phonemic awareness is a preliminary aural skill that enables children to distinguish how the sounds of language are manipulated into words in oral communication and, later, in written language. Students learning to read and spell must match the sounds, or phonemes, of spoken English with the individual letters, or groups of letters, that represent those sounds in written communication. Phonics instruction, along with the instruction and development of phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, enables reading and spelling proficiency to be maximized. As a reading specialist with years of experience in providing proven, successful instruction to hundreds of students, I am highly qualified to teach phonics.

Special Needs

I am a credentialed K-12 and adult teacher with advanced training and experience in teaching reading and writing to learners with attention and cognitive challenges specifically affecting learning to read and spell effectively. I use proven Orton-Gillingham programs to effectively advance mastery of skills that build confidence and competence. As a professional educator, I have specialized training in the Wilson Reading System and the Barton System. I have completed credentialing requirements which authorize me to work with students with special needs in classrooms. My students, who have significantly progressed in reading and writing with proper instruction, include those on the autism spectrum, those with ADHD, and many capable learners who have failed to achieve literacy in spite of (or because of) their education and unaddressed learning deficits.
