Drawing

I studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for a year before transferring to live closer to home and pursue Arabic studies. At RISD, I studied drawing, two-dimensional, and three- dimensional art intensively. I have been exposed to a variety of art approaches, perspectives and forms, including traditional drawing methods and techniques such as hatching and blending, measuring and gaining perspective, and experimental approaches such as drawing by using calligraphic marking and senses. In addition, I studied color theory, painting, sculpture, and graphic design, to name a few. While a student at Bard College, I studied printmaking, including woodblock, intaglio, aquatint and drypoint. Additionally, I volunteered mentoring a young teenager in the arts in producing creative projects of her choosing. I earned a senior art prize in artistic excellence while a high school student. I am interested and open to working with a variety of mediums, including charcoal, colored pencil, pen, clay, metal and glass (stained glass).

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

In 2013, I received an ESL certificate from the SIT Graduate Institute to teach English primarily to adults. I later taught English to young adults in New York City and tutored in English thereafter. As a native English speaker, I can help provide the knowledge and guidance to succeed in any of the four skill-sets, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Handwriting

I've been involved in the arts throughout my life, having attended the Rhode Island School of Design for a year. Handwriting is fortunately something that has come naturally to me and had always been a joy to acquire. While teaching at Kaplan, I checked student's spelling and handwriting on either their in-class or homework assignments. Teaching roughly 10 students per class, I worked with students from many different backgrounds, each having their own unique style of writing.
Reading,

Reading

I taught reading in classes, such as a "Reading and Vocabulary," at Kaplan in Manattan. I aim to help develop one's reading skills, such as by learning and implementing strategies and by other means. As I tutor in reading, I try to not always simply complete homework or an assignment but have the assignment or task relate to and affect one's life in a positive way.

I wrote academic papers extensively throughout high school and college. In college, I studied grammar, rhetoric, and style, narrative and analytical writing, thesis development (for short and long papers) as well as how to plan for, structure, and organize one's writing. At Bard, I wrote a 63 page thesis paper for my senior project. I enjoy the writing process as well as reading over, editing, working on, and responding to one's papers. I aim to help one improve, come to connect, and enjoy the writing process more as well.

Religion

Religion

I majored in Religion at Bard College where I studied Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam as well as a handful of religious thinkers, theologians and philosophers, their views on religion and its place in academia. For my senior project at Bard, I wrote a 60+ page thesis paper which compared the works of two classical Muslim jurists on Islamic Law. In writing the paper, I was further exposed to and deepened my understanding of Arabic while studying a few of the Islamic sciences, such as hadith, or the written words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad, and books on tafsir, or the interpretation of the Koran, by classical scholars. I have traveled to Kashmir, Jordan, and India where I was exposed to the practices of Hinduism, Islam, and to Buddhism briefly. Aiming to gain more access to religious texts, I plan to continue studying Arabic for the long term.

Ryan is amazing!

We needed help fast in multiple subjects to save my son’s first semester of high school and Ryan absolutely exceeded our expectations. Ryan was able to help my son get organized and on task with a plan on how to tackle the many assignments he needed to complete. Like many others this year, my child was having difficulty in his first year of high school with the new world of remote learning and fell behind and was in danger of failing. Ryan jumped in and helped my son with his reading and writing skills. They went over MLA format and how to cite and compose a well researched and written paper. He’s incredibly professional, punctual and polite and pushed my son to help achieve the necessary results to salvage the semester.

Amazing!

Ryan helped my son with his college Arabic class and this is what my son sent me via text, “Ryan was the most helpful tutor I’ve ever had on anything.” Thank you Ryan. We are definitely using you for all his Arabic needs.

Very methodical and patient, trustworthy and thorough

Ryan takes the whole picture into consideration with the student and proceeds with care. He gives the student positive feedback and reinforcement implementing thoughtful strategies to have the student better understand. Working together with the student, the student gets a real teaching and learning experience. I feel confident when Ryan works with my son that this lesson is about more than the particular problem at hand and brings more, in so many aspects, than the task at hand. He is thoughtful, reliable, trustworthy, dependable, and accommodating with scheduling. Very professional and serious about his work too!
