I built my language expertise from the ground up-- I understand the struggles of English speakers learning these languages. I'm eager to pass this experience onto my students. My reviews say I'm a patient and cool dude, I think you will agree.

My language learning journey:

It all started when I learned Latin at a young age at school. This early introduction into foreign language sparked a life-long passion for learning languages that has guided my life and career.

I started to self-study Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese in high school. Why? In short, I was profoundly intrigued by the history and culture of the region. Yes, video games got me into it.

In 2014, I accepted a US State Department scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan at Wenzao-Ursuline University of Languages. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a concentration in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. I started working as a linguist shortly thereafter, traveling all over Asia while working for some very influential people. In 2024, I graduated with a master's degree in Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Illinois. I'm now a mid-career professional with the experience and competence to help mentor the next generation of aspiring language professionals.

I strive to see students make progress in a fun, natural and exciting way, and I am looking forward to sharing the love of learning languages with you! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or to set up an appointment.

Chinese

Chinese

In April 2014, I was selected by the US State Department to receive a full-ride scholarship to study abroad under the National Securities Language Initiative for youth. My scholarship took me to Taiwan, where I participated in intensive Chinese learning accompanied by immersion in a Chinese-speaking environment. In Taiwan, I studied at the prestigious Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Kaohsiung. At the end of my stay, I completed a research project on the languages of Taiwan and how they have been affected by external influences, which was composed of an essay and an oral presentation on the topic. Both the essay and oral presentation were done in an academic setting, using Chinese as the sole method of communication. I also sometimes informally tutored other students at my language school in Chinese, mostly with a focus on test prep.
Japanese

Japanese

While studying at the Wenzao Ursuline University of languages, I took many hours of coursework in Japanese. One of these courses was Professional Japanese Communication and Language, a course focused on learning how to use Japanese in a formal academic setting where we often held debates, speech competitions such as Biblio-battle, and other events that engaged us in high-level use of formal Japanese. Since then, I've been interacting and speaking with Japanese speakers in many aspects of everyday life— from meeting up with Japanese exchange students for lunch everyday to tutoring Japanese to friends just starting out, I like to make it a point to use Japanese in a variety of situations, so I can constantly increase vocabulary and fluency.

Japanese lesson was extremely helpful!

Ryan is very helpful with teaching me Japanese. He is very thorough and actually taught the majority of the lesson in Japanese which really helps me click better with understanding. If I ever have a question, he clears it up quickly for me to better understand. He uses visuals/pictures and that is also very useful in learning. I highly recommend his lessons to anyone who is looking to learn the subjects he teaches.

Very helpful and understanding

Ryan walked me through the steps I needed to take to complete a java programming project for school. He took time to prepare the material before meeting with me and explained everything in detail.

Knowledgable and Patient Tutor

For the past four lessons, Ryan helped me start, and finish, my Computer Science project (in Java). He was very patient, responsive, and had quite a flexible schedule. He knew exactly what I was trying to output onto the screen, and effectively explained it. Rather than just doing the entire project on his own, he showed me examples of what was expected, and showed me how to apply it to my code. He knew exactly what he was teaching me, all while being effective, thorough, and patient. I am beyond happy with my final project, and I would highly recommend Ryan as a tutor.
