About Robert

I’m an artist. But since no one can make a living as an artist, I’ve been creating, directing and photographing ads and commercials for big and small clients for 30 years. A creative director at one of New York City’s hottest ad agencies, I create ideas for clients like Wendy's, Pfizer, US Bank, P&G, Clairol, Pilot Pen, Capital One, Parmalat, Marshalls, Girl Scouts and the Ad Council. I am currently the Principal/Creative Director of Focus Content in Scottsdale.

I’ve worked as Creative Director and Executive Creative Director for many national and global agencies and clients.

Actually, I started as a painter and was mentored by the great Neo-Plasticist, Ilya Bolotowski. I worked with the notables of 20th Century art like, Wilhem DeKoonig, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Dash, Larry Rivers and Ibrahm Lassaw. I also worked as a curator at The Parrish Museum in Southampton, The Guild Hall Museum in Easthampton, The Metropolitan Museum/Queens Museum and lectured at the Cloisters. I translated my skill in painting and design into pottery; making pottery when taking my Masters degree at Pratt Institute. Little did I know that pottery, not painting, would turn out to be my passion. I teach at The Art Institute of Phoenix. In New York, I taught at the prestigious School of Visual Arts.

I started as a museum curator and morphed into an ad guy. The art world is great structure, advertising is great focus. My students ask if can find true creativity in business? Yes. If you embrace it everyday.

Before you run the world, you have learn to do everything that makes it run. My students get “real world” experience. Art direction, graphic design, video production, photography, art and art history can be daunting fields to navigate. It’s great to have talent but no one tells you the “big secret”. That talent, while really important, is often not enough. I teach my students the art of business as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I was a curator in 19th century French Neo-Classicism at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Graphic Design

I'm an Executive Creative Director/Creative Director in advertising, with 30 years of experience working on national and global accounts. To direct and administer to extremely talented people, you have to be as good, if not better, than they are. I gain respect and understanding from students, collaborators and co-workers by knowing how to do their job. I make people feel comfortable with my input.

Photography

As a Creative Director/Art Director on the most prestigious accounts in advertising, I spend a lot of time in the photographic studios and on location with some of the best photographers in the world. I watched, listened to them and learned. Especially the most critical aspect, lighting. I started shooting when I was young. Photography was in my blood. My career also depended on my knowledge of photography. My preference is shooting still life and fashion/beauty.

Video Production

As Executive Creative Director of a highly visible NY agency in the 1990's, I was asked by a client to direct a commercial because he believed I understood his brand better than anyone else. The commercial was a success and I later went on to open a production company and an advertising agency, Snyder & Partners in NYC. I directed commercials, films and videos for many of the clients I had. I am currently directing videos for my clients and clients from other agencies here in Arizona.
