Hello, thanks for considering me as a potential tutor. I previously taught high school for 6 years and instructed college courses on philosophy and mathematics. In my high school career, I taught courses in English, History, and Mathematics, and spent 3 years as Chair of the Mathematics Department. All of my high school teaching experience is at a unique school where all courses are taught 1-1 and in an individualized manner, ideally preparing me to serve as your tutor. I have also taught SAT preparation courses.

I am now an attorney, and use that legal background to inform my instruction in history and related courses. Lawyers are, first and foremost, writers, and so I am prepared to assist with English, writing, and related material as well. And my legal background also informs my mathematics tutoring, since lawyers are experts in logical reasoning.

In certain cases, I draw on my extensive background in community service and leadership. I have been a Paramedic since 2006, and worked in a variety of settings, including 911/emergency services, interfacility transports, and prison transports. I have also been a volunteer firefighter, off and on and in various locations, since age 18. I was a Justice of the Peace, and was elected to the Planning Commission in Westbrook, Connecticut. Before that, I was an appointed member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. In addition, I have worked in emergency planning, including serving at a high school as Chair of Health and Safety and Director of Emergency Planning. I am in a unique position, of course, to teach about local government, land use law, and New England democracy.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is the study of relationships between objects, disregarding aspects of the objects themselves. This is a broader perspective than you might have been exposed to thus far; I can help you to understand the concepts on a deeper level and use it to expand your thinking, as well as to perform better in school.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In Algebra 2, students are expected to apply algebraic principles in more complex situations. In many cases, students have difficulty because they did not fully understand these concepts when they went through Algebra 1. I can help you to more fully understand algebraic thinking.
American History

American History

I tutor American History from a unique perspective, as a past elected official and having worked on several past campaigns, including a Presidential campaign. I can tutor you to do better in school, or we can expand on what you are learning (or both!) since there is so much more to History than what appears in your books. Discussion of the ideas, and connections to today, with an experienced teacher with real-world experience will enhance your educational experience.
Bar Mitzvah

Bar Mitzvah

I have studied trope alone and with a cantor. I frequently read Torah and haftarah, lead services, and teach Torah classes. I am prepared to help you learn to do those skills and prepare a dvar Torah.
Biology

Biology

What is life? How did it come to exist on this planet? What unifies living things, and what separates them from each other? We will explore these questions and more together as you expand your perspective and enhance your class performance.
Calculus

Calculus

I previously taught College Board approved AP Calculus classes, both AB and BC. I've also taught Calculus at the college level. In our work together, we will explore the main ideas of mathematical modeling, limiting process, rates of change, and areas, as well as their applications. You will emerge from tutoring with a greater understanding of the subject and its inner workings, and more confident of your ability to discover where it is of use and to use it appropriately.
EMT/ NREMT

EMT/ NREMT

I am a paramedic (currently licensed in Connecticut) and previously held various AHA certifications. I am happy to help you study for EMT, Intermediate, or Paramedic courses. I also taught math in the past and that helps with dosage calculations. Let me know how I can help!
Financial Accounting

Financial Accounting

I completed graduate courses in Accounting at Texas A&M University. I taught an annual seminar, required for graduation, on Personal Finance, and regularly taught more advanced Accounting principles to my students. If you are struggling to understand how reports are generated or how debits and credits work, please contact me.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I am a lawyer and former elected official and a veteran of several campaigns, including 2 Presidential campaigns. You will gain a broader perspective on this subject, and a greater understanding of how our governmental institutions work, from our time together.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I do not tutor Hebrew language. However, I can tutor bar/bat mitzvah students. I can teach Hebrew reading, Torah reading, haftarah reading, leading services, and help you prepare your dvar Torah.
Law

Law

I am a summa cum laude graduate from Wash U School of Law. I held three clerkships, 2 federal, including one at the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. I spent a year as a plaintiff-side class action attorney in ERISA and data privacy. I have also practiced constitutional and administrative law. I now am with a state Solicitor General, where I focus on constitutional law, election law, government accountability, and "odds and ends" in trial and appellate litigation.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I studied Linear Algebra in college. I have included a study of vector spaces in the final term of my Calculus classes for several years, and include the basics of vectors and linear transformations in Precalculus when teaching matrices.
Literature

Literature

Fiction can be just as true as non-fiction; the truths are simply expressed differently. Reading great novels is an excellent opportunity for reflection on the themes that humans have thought about through the ages. We will discuss these themes and how the novels approach them. You will better understand the world, your place in it, and the universal questions of mankind.
Logic

Logic

In college, I took every logic course available. My research is in reverse mathematics, an area of logic and computation. I have completed graduate studies in logic and set theory. In addition, I have taught logic courses ranging from introductory to advanced.
LSAT

LSAT

I scored a 174 on the LSAT, and I'm looking forward to helping you achieve your target score.
Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics

Economics has been called 'the dismal science' but it need not be! Just as Physics is in some ways the most fundamental physical science, so too Economics is the most basic social science. I will help you to bring the concepts to life, to see them in every-day life, and to understand how Economics impacts every decision we make. This subject is far more than impressive terminology and graphs, and you will come out of tutoring with a more holistic understanding - which will also, coincidentally, help your class performance.

Philosophy

Philosophy

We will explore together the most meaningful questions ever asked: what is the nature of the universe, of truth, of beauty? How do we know what we know? We will see the answers given by philosophers through the ages, and discuss your answers, allowing you to take your part in this grand discussion!
Proofreading

Proofreading

I will happily proofread your work, whether for publication, class essays, applications, or simply to help you improve your ability to express yourself through the written word.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have a long history of public speaking, and I am eager to share with you what I have learned over my years of practice. As an elected official, I spoke on the campaign stump, and currently speak in front of public hearings, at town meetings (New England town meeting democracy), and in other venues, such as speaking to young people about local government. In the past, I spoke on behalf of a Presidential candidate in local debates, and managed a Presidential campaign within the state of Connecticut. Currently, I am a lawyer and have made court appearances, including at trial.
Social Studies

Social Studies

My teaching experience includes having taught Economics and U.S. History, early and modern. I am well prepared to help you to integrate the various social sciences in your Social Studies course, blending the literature of a time period with its history, its economic factors and economic ideas, and other factors. My legal background, as a practicing attorney, helps me to supplement this instruction with practical experience, as does my experience as an elected official.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Schools often assume that students know how to learn. For some students, this is simply not instinctive. More specifically, some students have not learned how to work with their special minds, to learn in a style best suited to them. In my many years of experience teaching 1-1, individualized high school courses, I learned to identify students in need of work on these skills, and to help students discover methods of study and learning that work best for them. My classes focus primarily on how to learn and how to study. I have developed several methods of note-taking, which I suggest to different students depending on needs. I also teach outlining, annotation, and effective studying for assessments in all the subjects I have taught. I have helped students to prepare for exams in History, English, and several areas of Mathematics.
Writing

Writing

The written word has a permanence that the spoken work does not. Writing requires a different communication approach from speaking. This is sometimes difficult for students to understand; others understand it so well that they feel paralyzed in their writing. I can help you to learn how to communicate in writing, and how to make your ideas clear in a written format.

Brilliant!

Mr. K. is a brilliant man. He is helping my son become a better writer by having him write about something he is passionate about. It is nice to have the luxury over the summer to explore in depth a subject he could not explore during the school year. This teacher has the expertise to help him on many subjects.

Wonderful writing tutor

My son's writing is progressing nicely under Josh's instruction. I am thrilled to have found someone who understands and promotes unschooling.
