My strength lies in my ability to determine the root of the obstacles that are keeping a student from success and figuring out how to help them overcome these obstacles. I have eleven years of experience teaching science to students in grades 4-8.
I believe in the constructivist approach to learning. A student must be able to construct a framework of knowledge based on their own experiences and their own world view. It is up to the teacher to help the student tie what they already know to the new content so that the student will have ownership of the material. This is the only way the new content will be retained.
There are many tricks to the trade that are useful in reinforcing learning and the ability to recall and communicate what has been learned. Often times a student will have an understanding of the content but is unable to communicate this information.
I have experience and training in working with students with special needs. I am experienced in modifying and adapting assignments so they are more appropriate for the student. I am willing to work with the student's teachers and within the guidelines of his or her IEP. I can also help in making recommendations to teachers and family members if I see new ways of presenting the material or eliciting a response from the student.
I have a great sense of humor and can keep even the toughest customer engaged and learning!
