More On Judy's Subjects:

  • special needs

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education, including coursework in developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, visual & speech impairments, physical disabilities, emotional disturbance and behavioral disorders. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education with a concentration in Emotional Disturbance. I also completed 30 college credits in educational administration and special education administration. I have many years of experience teaching academics, social skills and behavioral skills to special needs populations. I also lead activity therapy groups for many years with adults and teens in psychiatric hospitals and substance abuse treatment centers.

  • study skills

While I have no formal training in study skills, I have always possessed strong study skills. With my former students, I helped them overcome whatever obstacles were in their way for achieving academic success. This included getting supplies, materials, notes, notebooks, binders, and study space organized, getting on a study schedule, overcoming anxieties about tests and performance, breaking skills and assignments down to small tasks, keeping focused on task and limiting distractions, and learning how to prepare and study for a test.Again, my B.S. and M.Ed. college degrees in Elementary and Special Education also prepared me to help students in this area.

  • swimming

From 1969-1979 I lifeguarded and taught beginning and intermediate swimming and basic water safety at summer camps, ponds, lakes, and coastal beaches through the American Red Cross. I was certified through the Red Cross as an instructor in Swimming, Water Safety,CPR, Standard First Aid, Multimedia First Aid,and Advanced First Aid, as well as a basic lifeguarding course. I am 55 years old now and have been swimming in deep water since I was 5 years old, including body surfing in Rhode Island and New York. I was also a long distance swimmer as a teen and young adult. The longest I ever swam was 12 consecutive hours in the ocean! While I have let my swimming instructor certificates expire, I have maintained my swimming skills and love for the water.
