About
Karen: |
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain. While there, my main focus of study was Oral French based on intensive French phonics, Advanced Grammar and Style, and French Commercial translation/interpretation. Based on my French course grades, I was admitted into Pi Delta Phi, the French National Honor Society.
While enrolled at U of I-UC, I participated in the Paris (France) Study Abroad program during my junior year, attending the University of Paris III, Sorbonne. There I pursued an intensive curriculum via six courses covering French Literature from the Middle Ages through the 20th century, sociology, economy, grammar and art. Each course required attendance at a three hour lecture followed by a one or two hour discussion group. The French Literature classes alone required that I read five French novels per week. As a result of my efforts at the Sorbonne I received a Diplome de Culture Francaise.
After graduation I obtained a position in Chicago at the Caisse Nationale de Credit Agricole, at that time, the largest bank in France. While employed there, I was able to use my bilingual skills daily. During my third year of employment, Management decided to send me to work at headquarters in Paris, France for one year to foster improved communications between headquarters and US headquarters in Chicago.
Having studied French for so long, living, and working in France, I clearly have a love of the language of France and its people. I am well versed in French etiquette, therefore, if you are planning a trip to France whether for business or pleasure, I can coach you on avoiding the "ugly American" syndrome.
My own personal philosophy regarding acquiring a foreign language is to do it properly, based on a strong foundation of proper grammar learned through regularly reading and writing the language) and authentic pronunciation (acquired through regular verbal practice).
My teaching style is relaxed and tailored to individual students' academic or personal needs. I adapt my teaching style according to students' learning styles, whether auditory, visual, etc. I am an outgoing person and try to make learning fun. This is especially important with children; I have experience tutoring children and have two of my own, ages 10 and 6.
