I have always had a passion for reading and writing and after 25 years as a research analyst for a major insurance company, I began a new career in education about four years ago.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Management from Ball State University and a Master's degree in Education with a concentration in English Language Learning from Ashford University. I have also worked as a volunteer tutor in the STAR Literacy program since 2000.

In October 2011, I begin teaching an Adult ESL class through the McLean County Regional Office of Education and in 2012 I became an ESL instructor with the Academic English Learner Program at Heartland Community College.

I look forward to working with students of any age who are interested in improving their reading and writing skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems and 26 years of business experience with State Farm Insurance Companies.

I worked as a mid-level manager, a corporate trainer, and as an underwriting research analyst. I am very experienced in researching a variety of business-related topics, writing cost-benefit analysis reports, and writing white papers and executive summaries.

I have also completed a Master's degree in Education with a specialization in TESOL through an online program, so I am familiar with the demands of participating in online discussion forums and completing a degree in an online format. I can assist business students in a variety of ways because of these experiences.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's degree in Education and have tutored both adults and children in Elementary Reading and Math through the STAR literacy program.

I also work part-time as an instructor with the Enopi Bloomington teaching reading and math enrichment courses in students K-8.

ESL/ESOL

I received a Master's of Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language from Ashford University in August 2011 and graduated with a 4.0 out of 4.0 GPA.

I have been a volunteer ESL tutor with the McLean County STAR Literacy program and have recently been hired as a paid instructor to teach a new ESL class for parents at Cedar Ridge Elementary School in Bloomington.

Needlework

I have been knitting and crocheting for over 40 years. I learned the basics from my grandmother at age 8 and have since studied different techniques. I have made and given blankets, baby clothing, and sweaters to friends and relatives for many years. I have also sold a number of winter hat and scarf sets online. I am a patient teacher and would love to share the ability to create beautiful and practical items with anyone who wants to learn.

Public Speaking

I am an experienced public speaker with over 10 years of experience in Toastmaster's International where I achieved the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation and won various club and area contests for speaking, evaluating, and participating in TableTopics.

Reading

I worked for 10 years as a volunteer Reading tutor with the STAR Literacy program. I now teach English as a Second Language at Heartland Community College.

Study Skills

I was a volunteer tutor with the STAR Literacy program for over ten years and assisted both children and adults in improving their reading, writing, and study skills. I have a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems from a traditional university and a Master's degree in Education where a significant number of the courses were completed online. I also have more than 200 hours of experience as a tutor with WyzAnt and as a paid tutor and instructor at Heartland Community College.

I am able to develop study plans for students based upon their own individual learning styles including note taking, highlighting, using flashcards, models or other manipulatives, auditory strategies including utilizing books and notes on CD, or mapping strategies.

If you are struggling to encourage a reluctant reader to read for at least 30 minutes per day, this website may help.  I began using this with Beginning English as a Second Language (ESL) students but have found that it also works well for K-6 readers as well.  Here are the instructions for accessing this FREE site:     Go to http://larryferlazzo.com/englishbeg... read more

Q WyzAnt wants to know If you could go back in time and give your younger self one piece of academic or professional advice, what would it be? My greatest piece of advice to my younger self would be to have more courage in following your true passions.  For example, I knew very early on that I loved writing but was fearful that my writing "wasn't good enough" and that I... read more

With the end of the school year quickly approaching I am receiving a lot of frantic requests from parents, “Could you please meet with my child tomorrow? He has a math test on Friday and if he doesn’t pass, he may have to go to summer school!” My policy is generally to refuse such requests, although I always do so with a very heavy heart since I know that the student most likely will fail... read more

Excellent Tutor! — Robin has been tutoring my 1st grade son for several months now with reading and math. We have seen such significant improvement in his grades! We couldn't be happier with their progress, and my son says "I even like math now". I appreciate that she took her time to evaluate where my son was in his learning process and how to best bring him up to grade level (or beyond). She comes prepared wit ...
