Many parents have asked me what is the best way to prepare junior high school students for high school. I encourage students to improve their writing and reading skills over the summer. Learn how to summarize written material and find the key points. Then focus on your essay writing and grammar. You should be able to do an outline of an essay on almost any topic easily. Then draft paragraphs in a clear, concise, active writing style. Just like any task, practice makes perfect! Use your free time in the summer to summarize articles, draft and polish essays, and nail down those pesky grammar issues. The result will be a more confident and prepared student with improved study and writing skills and better grades. Good reading comprehension and writing skills are necessary for college as well. Start early and use the summer time to focus on the needs of the individual student outside a crowded classroom.
